Relate & Grow provides developmental intervention services, educational consultation and professional development training that aids families and other caregivers, such as schools and daycare providers, in helping children reach their potential. Our services are based on the DIR (Developmental Individualized and Relationship-based) model of Dr. Stanley Greenspan and the PLAY Project Intervention m

odel developed by Dr. Richard Solomon. These evidence-based intensive intervention services have been shown to be effective for children with autism and other developmental differences. Edward Lott in 2008 as a division of Pro Health Care Services. At that time, it was the only program offering DIR and PLAY Project services in Franklin County. Relate & Grow is licensed by The PLAY Project. Monica holds a M.S. in education, and completed additional coursework and training that led her to become a Certified PLAY Project Consultant, Supervisor and Trainer; a Training Leader and Expert DIR/Floortime Provider, and a Profectum Trainer. In addition to her role as Owner and Program Director of Relate & Grow, Monica supervises and mentors other DIR and PLAY Project trainees, has provided training at a national and international level through ICDL (The Interdisciplinary Council on Development and Learning) and through the PLAY Project organization; and has served as a PLAY Project Supervisor of new trainees through the PLAY Project national organization as well as for the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD).

Why is it so hard for some kids to recognize when they’re hungry, tired, or overwhelmed?

Sometimes what looks like a meltdown is actually a child struggling to understand what their body is telling them.

This all ties back to something called interoception—our ability to notice and make sense of internal body signals like hunger, thirst, fatigue, and emotions. Often called the “8th sense,” interoception plays a big role in helping kids feel calm, focused, and self-regulated—but it can be underdeveloped or misunderstood, especially for neurodivergent children.

We love the way Kelly Mahler explains interoception in this article linked below. It’s a great introduction to how the body and brain work together in ways we don’t always think about:

https://www.kelly-mahler.com/what-is-interoception/

If you’d like a deeper dive into interoception and how to support your child’s awareness of their inner world, we’re hosting a group this summer called My Inner Sense. This group offers kids a chance to explore body signals and emotions through play, while parents gain practical tools for supporting self-regulation at home.

-Open to all children 14 and under - neurotypical and neurodivergent
-Tuesdays: 6/18, 6/25, 7/9, 7/16, 7/23, 7/30, & 8/6 from 4–5 PM

DIRFloortime & PLAY Project Included in AMA’s Expanded Autism Policy!

Back in 2023, the American Medical Association (AMA) updated its policy to support insurance coverage for all evidence-based interventions for autism — not just ABA. This means developmental approaches like DIRFloortime and the PLAY Project are finally getting the recognition they deserve as valid, research-supported options for care!

At Relate & Grow, this kind of relationship-based, child-led care is at the heart of what we do. We’ve seen firsthand how powerful it can be to support children through play, connection, and emotional growth.

Check out the blog post below by Jeffrey Guenzel, CEO of ICDL, for more info on the impact of the AMA’s decision and what it means for families, providers, and the future of care:
