Issue 471: Melaleuca Summer First Aid Kit

Dear friend,

When I started my publishing company back in 1994, it was with the goal of educating consumers about the harms of toxic chemicals in household products. At the time Melaleuca was one of the only companies offering safe options in household cleaning and personal care products. Since then our slogan has been "because educated consumers make healthier choices." Over the years Melaleuca has continued to be the leader in developing naturally-based household and health-related products. And our mission is still the same — to help consumers make healthier choices by providing them with timely and relevant information. This newsletter is our latest attempt to help you make healthier choices for your family.

I sincerely hope this information will be helpful to you or someone you know.

God bless,
Richard M Barry

Melaleuca Summer First Aid Kit

Ever been on a family trip and someone somehow cuts themselves or has a headache or does something that requires first aid? But since you’re not at home you can’t run to your medicine shelf and pull out those items you need.

Wait—you can. Melaleuca’s First Aid Kit is just the item to take with you on every family outing. It comes with these following first aid items:

(1) Ace-style wrap

(12) Gauze pads

(1) Medical Tape

(1) Stainless Steel Tweezers

(1) Melaleuca-branded Instant Cold Pack

(2) Roll Gauze

(4) Melaleuca-branded butterfly bandages

(1) Melaleuca-branded Gel Bead Pack

(1) Melaleuca Flexible Fabric Bandages

And it also includes the following Melaleuca products that you may just need while on vacation that you may not have considered taking with you and why they are important:

T36-C5® Melaleuca Oil: Trial Size—Did you know that Melaleuca raised the standards for both grades of their oil to T36-C5 and T40-C3, which demonstrates a commitment to making the very best oil available? And as The Melaleuca Wellness Guide states, “this high-grade oil is used in a wide range of Melaleuca products.” To find out more about Melaleuca oil’s healing properties read the chapter “That Amazing Tea Tree Oil!” in The Melaleuca Wellness Guide.

CounterAct® Pain, Acetaminophen—as The Melaleuca Wellness Guide suggests, CounterAct Pain can be used in any instance where a headache, earache, or any other ache might occur.

Triple Antibiotic Ointment—for abrasions, bug bites, cuts, or any other skin wounds to aid not only in healing but to prevent infection. The Melaleuca Wellness Guide recommends using as frequently as needed for several days until all redness has disappeared.

Renew® Intensive Skin Therapy: Travel Size—Even though Renew is thought of first for use on dry skin, did you know that it can also be used as diaper rash cream, aid with skin allergy reactions, and sunburns. The Melaleuca Wellness Guide also suggests using it to aid in athlete’s foot (apply T36-C5 first), chapped hands, and as a barrier to help prevent infection after applying any essential oil.

Natural Insect Repellent and sprayer—unfortunately insects don’t take a vacation, and being outside in summer involves bug bites. Melaleuca’s Natural Insect Repellent is “DEET-free and tested to help ward of insects while you are outside.”

Sun Shades lip balm—most vacations involve being outside, in the heat or the cold, and “wind, cold, and sun take its toll on mucous membranes of the lips” states The Melaleuca Wellness Guide. Sun Shades Lip Balm not only speeds recovery of chapped lips but also prevents sunburned lips if applied before going outside.

Three things to remember—

Take Melaleuca First Aid Kit with you on every family outing or vacation.

Restock the First Aid Kit with the items that you found helpful or other Melaleuca’s medicine cabinet products that you need when on vacation.

Order an extra copy of The Melaleuca Wellness Guide to take with the Melaleuca First Aid Kit so that you will know where and when to use any of the Melaleuca products.

from RM Barry Newsletter 454: Recall of Toxic Personal Care Products

You may have seen in the news lately a recall on various "grocery store brand" personal care products due to benzene. But what is benzene? According to OSHA, benzene is used in the manufacturing of many types of plastics, detergents, and pesticides. Exposure to benzene can cause blood cancers like leukemia and other health concerns. The CDC website lists not only how benzene exposure can harm consumers, but also how workers are at risk from products made with benzene including those that work in factories, the printing industry, and fire fighters.

The Personal Care Products Council stated that they “are aware of the study reporting the presence of benzene in some antiperspirant and deodorant sprays.” And yet, higher levels allowed by OSHA and CDC were detected in many personal care products the past few months.

As early as the summer of 2021, a recall was sent out for sunscreen sprays manufactured by Coppertone as they had “identified the presence of benzene in lots of these products.” Neutrogena and Aveeno, products of Johnson & Johnson, also recalled many of their sunscreens in July 2021.

In October 2021, over the counter antifungal products made by Bayer were recalled due to a high presence of benzene in some samples of the products. The FDA lists the products that were recalled, among which are Lotrimin® and Tinactin®.

On November 17, 2021, the FDA published a report that Odor-Eaters were recalling some of their products due to benzene contamination.

Early December 2021, “benzene was found in over half of 108 batches of antiperspirant and deodorant body sprayers from 30 different brands.” A citizen’s petition was filed with the FDA due to the unacceptable toxicity.

During the pandemic the FDA allowed a temporary use of benzene in liquid hand sanitizers.

In late December 2021, Proctor and Gamble recalled most of their dry shampoos and conditioners due to trace amounts of benzene found in the products. For more information on products and companies with recalled products due to benzene, visit the FDA website and type in the search engine: “benzene recall”.

What You Can Do to Avoid These Toxic Products
So now that you know which products to avoid, what do you use instead?

As you may well know, one property of Melaleuca oil is killing bacteria. As stated in The Melaleuca Wellness Guide “when we use harsh chemicals against bacteria we can also unbalance and even destroy our own body cells.” Thus using what nature has given us allows us to have a healthy life, or as The Melaleuca Wellness Guide says “pure Melaleuca Oil works with the body, not against it.”

Melaleuca antiperspirants and deodorants come in many types for both men and women. They all contain Melaleuca Oil (tea tree oil) as well as many other plant-derived ingredients that are not only safe to use, but also effective in odor protection.

Just because it’s not summer in some areas of the world, doesn’t mean that you aren’t susceptible to sunburn. Melaleuca’s Sun Shades Mineral Plus and Sport SPF not only protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB sunrays, but also don’t contain benzene. So you can go out in the sun, no matter what season, knowing that you are helping your skin and yourself.

Dr. Andrew Weil, quoted in The Melaleuca Wellness Guide, writes, “Tea Tree Oil is the best treatment I know for fungal infections of the skin. It will also clear up fungal infections of the toenails or fingernails, a condition notoriously resistant to treatment even by strong systemic antibiotics.” In the “Healthy Body” chapter of The Melaleuca Wellness Guide the section on athlete’s foot states that using Melaleuca Oil and applying Dermatin Antifungal Cream helps prevent and treat any fungal infection on feet. This same treatment can also apply to fungal infections in the fingernails. Just be careful to not rub your eyes or face while having the oil or cream on your fingers.

Melaleuca’s Clear Defense Hand Sanitizer and Hand Sanitizing Wipes kills 99.9% of most illness-causing germs with plant-based ingredients while moisturizing your hands as well. Look in the Product Index of The Melaleuca Wellness Guide for many more reasons why Clear Defense Hand Sanitizer and Hand Sanitizing Wipes are your best defense against germs.

And to replace any over the counter dry shampoos or conditioners, Melaleuca’s Sei Bella Dry Shampoo can be used by everyone, no matter the hair type, for a quick refresh between shampoos or while vacationing, camping, utilizing less water, or to just prevent over-washing your hair. Be sure to follow directions and remember: less is more.

If you’ve been a Melaleuca customer for a number of years you already know that most (if not all) store-brand personal care products and home care products can be switched with Melaleuca products, giving you a healthier lifestyle.

For more information on the products that can be used instead of those that contain benzene or other harmful ingredients, visit many of the chapters covering the home and body, and the product index, in The Melaleuca Wellness Guide.

Newsletter 431: Essential Oils for Summer

The sun is shining, beaches and pools will soon be crowded, backyards will be filled with the smell of BBQ grilling, and memories will soon be made. With all the activities that will commence don’t forget to smell the geraniums—or the peppermint, the lavender, the lemongrass, the clove, the orange, or many others.

What do these scents have to do with summer? Actually, there are many summertime uses for essential oils that can help your summer memories be filled with sweet scents—whether being diffused, in spray form, or used directly on the skin.

Peppermint and Spearmint
Peppermint and spearmint are natural refreshers. Combine a few drops of either one with Renew Lotion and apply it to the bottom of your feet to soothe hot, tired feet after a day at the beach or pool. Or better yet, make a homemade peppermint or spearmint foot scrub: Mix ¼ cup sugar, ¼ cup baking soda, ¼ cup carrier oil, and 10 drops of peppermint oil in a glass container. Rub onto your feet to remove dry skin and give your feet a spa treatment.

Problems with insects outdoors and indoors? Medline Plus warns that breathing or swallowing DEET bug spray can cause poisoning. And even pyrethrin bug sprays can cause problems. We also learn that DEET is especially dangerous to small children.

Melaleuca's Natural Insect Repellent is formulated with Peppermint, Cinnamon, Lemongrass, Thyme, and Geranium oils. It is non-sticky and 99% effective against mosquitoes and ticks. This study found thyme oil extremely effective at repelling mosquitoes.

As The Melaleluca Wellness Guide suggests combine a few drops of peppermint or spearmint, clove, lemongrass and geranium in a glass spray bottle with water and spritz onto your skin before going outside. You can also use this blend in your diffuser to rid your house of those flies and mosquitos that seemed to have snuck their way inside. For other great repellents using essential oils check out the Essential Oil chapter or sections entitled “insect repellents” or specific pests in The Melaleluca Wellness Guide.
Too much sun or summer fun? Mix peppermint or spearmint with a carrier oil or Renew Lotion and rub onto sore muscles or temples to help with headaches.

Lavender
Lavender is the first "go to" essential oil when sleep evades us, but this essential oil can also be calming to the skin besides the mind. After a day in the sun, blend a few drops each of lavender, Roman chamomile, and spearmint with Renew Lotion or aloe vera gel and use to help with over-heated or sunburned skin. You can also put these three essential oils into a glass spray bottle with water and spray onto to your skin to help promote healing of sunburns.
Lavender essential oil has long been used to repel insects. This study found that lavender compared well to DEET for repelling ticks.

Eucalyptus
Due to the anti-inflammatory properties of this essential oil, eucalyptus is a great alternative to, or combined with, peppermint or spearmint oils. It can be used on sunburned skin, and the effects of too much sun such as headaches and sore muscles.

Blend a few drops of eucalyptus oil with Renew Lotion or a carrier oil and rub onto hot, sunburned skin. Or mix 2 to 4 drops in a glass spray bottle filled with water and spray onto the skin to relieve the heat. One study found that eucalyptus combined with peppermint oil proved to be a significant analgesic in relieving headaches. When combined with ginger and rosemary, eucalyptus oil aids in relieving sore muscles.

Eucalyptus oil is also a natural insect repellent by itself or combined with peppermint, geranium, lavender, or rosemary. It can be used in a diffuser or as a spray. The Melaleuca Wellness Guide states that eucalyptus oil can be used as an environmentally friendly house fly insecticide.

Geranium
Summer is generally thought of as a fun time, but it does bring a change in schedules, which can then upset sleep or your natural rhythm. Diffusing geranium essential oil by itself or mixed with lavender can help be a great stress reliever and mood booster.
Adding a few drops to Renew Lotion or a carrier oil and applied to sore muscles aids in overuse done by hiking those long trails during the day or just throwing too many horseshoes.

As mentioned previously, geranium in combination with other oils is also a great insect repellent inside and outside.

Orange
The smell of oranges always brings to mind the bright summer sun and freshness. However, this essential oil can also be used as a natural insecticide for mosquitos and flies according to this study, which found it be useful when used as a spray. In a glass spray bottle combine several drops of orange essential oil with water, shake thoroughly before spraying a mist into the room or area you want to rid flying pests. If desired, other insect-repelling essential oils such as cedarwood, patchouli, peppermint, geranium, lemongrass, or ylang-ylang can be added.

According to The Melaleuca Wellness Guide the essential oil orange helps reduce pain and improve function with moderate-to-severe knee pain. Combine a few drops of this oil with carrier oil or Renew Lotion and massage into the joint.

Summer Smells
You don’t have to lose the smell of summer once it ends. You can recreate the memories of summer as suggested in this study that showed that scents, our emotions, and memory are intertwined. Some oils to blend together in a diffuser to bring back the smell of the ocean or beach are: lime, lavender, eucalyptus, and rosemary; or geranium, ylang-ylang, cerdarwood, and rose. To remind you of the crisp outdoors: lavender, grapefruit, lemon, and spearmint; or orange, ginger and patchouli. There are an infinite number of blends that can remind you of the summer—just put a few drops of your favorite essential oils into a diffuser and sit back to reminisce.
There are many more essential oils that can be used to help make summertime fun and memorable without the memories of aches, pain, and sunburn. To find out more check out the chapter Essential Oils in The Melaleuca Wellness Guide and then go have fun in the sun!
