Amen sister!

Halloween is almost here, and as an elementary school teacher I can already see the excitement brewing. I love seeing all kinds of kids light up with excitement. In our classrooms (and neighborhoods), we see so much beautiful diversity: kids of different ages, abilities, languages, personalities, and exceptionalities. They’re all just trying to have fun, be included, and feel that same spark of joy.

As the trick-or-treaters start showing up, let’s lead with compassion. Not every child who doesn’t say “trick or treat” or “thank you” is being rude. Some are nonverbal, shy, overwhelmed, or still learning social cues. Others may seem a little awkward or forgetful, and that’s okay too. Childhood is short, and grace goes a long way.

And please let the teens come too! 👻 They could be doing a million other things, but instead they’re out walking, laughing, and holding onto a little piece of magic from their younger years. No need for snide comments. Just hand them the candy and cheer them on.

This Halloween, let’s make room for all kinds of joy, all kinds of kids, and all kinds of magic. Love Ms. Chang 👻 🎃
