For Rachel Lapidus

For Rachel Lapidus On July 27th, 2011 Rachel went into Cardiac Arrest. We were told Rachel would never walk or talk again. Look at her now! This all changed on July 27th 2011.

Rachel was a perfectly healthy 19 year old girl. She had graduated high school and was in college full time plus working a full time job. She had a boyfriend and drove a nice little yellow convertible. Rachel has always been a loving person growing up. Especially to her little brother who she always had an awesome bond with. She loves people, she loves animals, and would go out of her way to try to help who ever and where ever she could. Rachel had dreams of being a Special Education teacher and all this was taken away one July night. While in the middle of a heated argument with her cousin Rachel all of a sudden stiffened up and dropped. her heart just stopped. We performed CPR within 4 minutes of the incident but Rachel's heart did not start up for almost 9 minutes. Because of this Rachel is suffering from an Anoxic Brain Injury (Lack of Oxygen). When this first happened we were told there was no chance for quality of life because she was down too long. As parents, you would not want to hear something like that about your child. So we fought for her survival with her. We pushed for rehab and after almost a week of arguing with the doctors and Insurance companies finally, Rachel was moved to Rehab Hospitals of Indiana. This approval from the Insurance company was for 3 days. 72 days later Rachel walked out of that rehab and her recovery still continues today. Rachel is a miracle and continues to amaze the doctors who we are all trying to prove wrong. Rachel now has an amazing opportunity ahead of her. Rachel qualifies for HBOT Therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment which enhances the body's natural healing process by inhalation of 100% oxygen in a total body chamber, where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. It is used for a wide variety of treatments usually as a part of an overall medical care plan. Under normal circumstances, oxygen is transported throughout the body only by red blood cells. With HBOT, oxygen is dissolved into all of the body's fluids, the plasma, the central nervous system fluids, the lymph, and the bone and can be carried to areas where circulation is diminished or blocked. In this way, extra oxygen can reach all of the damaged tissues and the body can support its own healing process. The increased oxygen greatly enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria, reduces swelling and allows new blood vessels to grow more rapidly into the affected areas. It is a simple, non-invasive and painless treatment. After the phone consult we were told that RACHEL IS TREATABLE! Her cognitive problems, speech problems, even some of the physical problems are all treatable with HBOT

As parents, after what we have been through to hear those words and would again do ANYTHING we can to make this happen so we are asking for you to help be the miracle for Rachel Lapidus. She spent 10 days on full life support and 72 days in intensive inpatient rehab at Rehab Hospital of Indianapolis. She now faces years of outpatient rehab to regain basic self-care skills. Rachel's parents, Randy and Robin Lapidus, have been working very hard with Rachel and their efforts are paying off. Even though Rachel has a long way to go, her recovery so far has been miraculous. Help support the Lapidus family in their time of need. You can donate by going to www.gofundme.com/MiracleForRachel

Rachel continues to recover from the surgery. She is so ready for Tuesday to get here to get these stitches out. She said today that's what's bothering her the most.
Rachel wanted to get out for a bit today. She and I went to Shelbyville to see a play. It was really funny and Rachel loved it.

She was worn out when we got home, but said it was worth it.
The rest of the day, Rachel relaxed and called it a night early. If she has her way about it, she will sleep until 11 tomorrow.

Short note tonight...

Rachel had a quiet day. Her stitches are driving her crazy and she can't wait until Tuesday so she can get them out.
Rachel is going stir crazy being in the house all the time, so this evening, she rode with me to grab dinner at Yannis King Gyros.
While we were waiting for our to go order, we ran into a couple of friends. We had a quick chat with each of them before heading home. One friend works at REACH, and now Rachel is missing her friends out there.
Thanks for the chats, Sasha and Bob! Rachel reminded me that Bob will be visiting the ice cram truck the night of the fireworks. She also said he might even come to the food truck festival.

Rachel was up a little later tonight, so I know she will sleep in.
She is hoping she's feeling well enough tomorrow afternoon to get out for a little bit and go with mom to see a play.

02/28/2026

Rachel was up a little earlier this morning, but qas in no hurry to get moving.
She did get out of the house for a little bit this morning. Dad was at work at the cinema, and I had to have a tb test red and needed to pick up a prescription at Walmart. Just that little bit of time out wore Rachel out, so after lunch, she rested for most of the day. The being tired or getting worn out is normal with having the infection and the surgery as her body had been fighting so hard to fight the infection and continues to fight any lingering infection. The antibiotics also play a roll in the low energy. It will take some time for her to get back to her normal energy level.
Rachel had a hard time getting comfortable tonight, the discomfort of the stitches is driving her crazy. Hopefully when those come out Tuesday.her discomfort will ease up.

Rachel has been sleeping very well since coming home from the hospital.
Today, she was feeling a little better but gets tired throughout the day.
She also has found her bed is the most comfortable place. Thankfully, the way her room is set up, she can begin her bed with the door open, and we can see each other when I'm in the and carry on conversations . .
This evening she asked if we could go over to parkside to visit our friends at the food trucks. She was bummed that we didn't get to take the ice cream truck though. We explained to her with the fact that she just got out of the hospital and the cold weather expected it was just not a good idea. We did get over to grab supper and dessert, and just that little time out worrier out. We came home, ate and Rachel was in bed and sound asleep before 8.
Hopefully we can get her back into her normal sleeping pattern soon.

Rachel still sleeping in, which is OK she's healing.
Today was another day of relaxing and taking it easy for Rachel. She did start getting bored a little but we found things to do. She says sitting at the kitchen table isn't real comfortable yet so the recliner is where she is like to be or in her bed. We looked through her crafts and although she didn't do any today she said she might try to sit at the table and get one started tomorrow.
This afternoon Rachel was telling us she was having a little pain. She said "It might be about a 5 right now, but at bedtime it will be a 10." She's STILL using the pain scale from the hospital, and remembers the nurse saying a 5 was Tylenol, but a 10 was stronger. I guess she thought a 10 would get her the good stuff like the first night at the hospital...lol I got news to for her, they did not send home morphine, just some hydrocodone.
Rachel went to bed around 8 tonight, even though she had to take her last dose of antibiotics at 9:30. When it was time Dad took it in to her. He knocked on her door and she said, "Come in.: he told her he was the night shift nurse and was there to take her vitals, give her meds, and draw some blood." She was ok.until he said draw blood that's when she said OH he'll no! I'm done witb blood draws for now.
We are planning on Rachel sleeping late again tomorrow. We thought she was asleep.already but here we are chatting away.

Rachel had another full night's sleep last night. I actually woke her up about 9:30 so she could take her first dose of antibiotics.

Rachel was between the recliner and her bed today. But I was in the living room a little more today than yesterday. She did get out some crafty things today, but that's as far as she got. She said maybe we will work on them tomorrow.

Rachel's pain tolerance is very high, but tonight, it got to her. I think when she tried to put the legs down on the recliner, she strained a little. It's one of those that you have to push down with your feet, and she just does t habit the strength. I was in the kitchen when she said I have to go to the bathroom. I was headed in to help her get up, but Rachel being hard headed, and she has said how she hates having help all the time. I couldn't wait and was trying to do it herself. Hopefully, she will wait next time.

Rachel finally got to sleep, and im sure she will get another good nights rest.

02/24/2026

Rachel slept like a log last night. She got a full 13 HOURS! When she got up to go to the bathroom, she actually asked if she could go back to bed. I didn't let her though because she had antibiotics to take and I didn't want to delay then any longer since she takes them 3 times a day. They are large pills so Dad cuts them in half foe her.

It was a very quiet day for Rachel. She played on her tablet, watched some movies, and rested.
She has gotten her appetite back but is still being aware of her carb and sugar intake.
This evening I ran out and picked up some things from B of Columbus. Rachel had her eye on the buttery toffee cookie, which she thought was coffee flavored and we had to remind her what toffee was. When we told her the Grandma use to make it at Christmas time she suddenly remembered and.wanted to try it. She was worried about sugar and only wanted to split one with me. She said it was delicious and said we will have to split another one tomorrow. I guess that means I can't eat it for my midnight snack.
Rachel went down pretty quick tonight and is down to just Tylenol for pain. I think she only took something twice today. At the hospital it was about every 4 hours she was saying she was hurting.
I know over the next week ton1p days Rachel is going to go stur crazy. I've already been thinking of crafty things we can do. She still has a few things she bought after Christmas, and I just remembered she has a bunch of puzzles we could start on and.get WAY ahead on Christmas gifts.

We are so happy that Rachel is finally home.
She was released this afternoon and came home to some very happy pets. Cami was rolling around on the floor, Abbey was sniffing Rachel's clothes up and down, Gracie was waiting patiently for Rachel to go in her room so she could jump up on her bed. Steve, well he's an orange cat so he just kind of wondered around.
Randy had been busy while Rachel was in the hospital. He would.come up in the morning, stay through the day, then come home in the evenings, and do all the household things, taking care of the pets, cleaning, and making sure everything was ready for Rachel to come home.
Rachel was so happy Dad had made her bed and put her cow sheets on as well as her tye dye pillow cases she made. She said she was going to sleep good tonight.
Rachel is healing well, and all her labs came back good this morning. Tomorrow we have to call and make follow up appointments.
She will be taking it easy for the next couple weeks and we are hoping for a speedy recovery.
She said she has to get better soon because Ice Cream season starts AND her birthday is coming. She's already counting down to when she can get more done to her tattoo. She was even showing the nurse her turtle tattoo this morning.

02/22/2026

Rachel has had another progressive day. She is off the one antibiotics. It was the harsh one that was causing problems with her veins and also took hours to be administered. Of course that made her very happy.
Rachel is eating well, and with the help of a carb counter via the hospital Let's Eat! section of My chart, she is really watching the carb intake.
Today is also the first day Rachel has not taken a nap during the day, or been laying down when she isn't eating. She's been sitting in the middle of her bed with her legs crossed Indian style this evening and hasn't said anything about pain tonight. We also took a nice walk around the unit and I couldn't keep up with her. She did try to escape through the double doors though, which reminded me of when she was at RHI and she tried to leave the brain injury unit.
We are hoping she gets to go home tomorrow, but also realize it may be Monday.
Rachel is missing her friends, pets, and her own bed. I'm sure she will sleep like a baby that first night home.
We are getting ready to get comfortable and watch a movie. Hopefully since she's down to one antibiotic we won't be woke a million times tonight.

Rachel has had a pretty good day. She has had a few issues with her I've and has had to have it moved 3 times. One of the antibiotics is hard on the vein and has caused the I've line to pop out of the vein depositing fluid under the skin..they have told me the term for it but of course I can't remember it....wait yes I can it's infiltrating.
Anyway her spirits are good. The Dr said medically she's good they are just waiting for culture's to come in so they know what antibiotics to send her home on.

Tonight has been a barrel of laughs for her nurse and aid. Rachel was having some pain and the nurse gave her a pain pill. It started working about 20 minutes later when the aid came in to check her vitals. The aid was entering things on the computer and all the sudden she stopped, grabbed a little bottle of odor eliminating spray and started spraying it. I looked at Rachel thinking she passed gas when the aid said, "Sorry I'm a little gassy and didn't want to stink up the room." Rachel has been cracking up ever since, hence the picture that she said I HAD to share.
Between the pain meds and being tired it's made for a comical night.
We have our fingers crossed those cultures come in tomorrow and we can bust her out of here before the snow comes in on Sunday.
Rachel has said she hopes for visitors when she gets home and we will let anyone that wants to visit know when she's ready..

Someone forgot to hit the post button.......

Rachel has taken another two towards coming home. She has been moved out of Progresive Care to a regular room. She has been taken off the fall risk list, her heart rate is getting back to normal, she is fever free, and her drain is draining well with no sign of infection!!!! She is so over being poked. Her poor arms look like pincushion, and they had to move her in again tonight.
We have our fingers crossed that it will be the last time they have to move it.
The Dr this afternoon said they are hopeful she will be able.to come home Saturday or Sunday.
She's relaxing and watching a movie waiting for another round of antibiotics before calling it a night. From the looks of her mychart we should only be woke up at 2 am then can sleep until 8.

A final update on Rachel for the night...

She FINALLY got taken into surgery and is now back in her room. They removed a very infected softball size abscess, but everything went well.
She says shes in a little pain. She is still groggy and actually just asked where she is.
It was a long day with surgery pushed back several times. She had not had anything to eat since lunch yesterday so she is VERY hungry. The surgeon said don't eat like it's golden corral, but she can now have foods. .

They are getting her hooked up between bites of baked chips and Applesauce while she waits for a turkey sandwich. Then she said she's going to sleep.

We want to tank everyone for their thoughts and prayers during this scary adventure we have been on over the last 24 hours.
