The "Love and Hugs" Program began by a young teenager named Emily, who shared a special bond with her great-grandmother, Joan. Emily had made her a teddy bear in a Yankees uniform (Joan's favorite) to keep her company and be a reminder of her great grandchildren. The bear stayed by Joan's side for many years, and went with her during her hospital visits and ultimately, her stay at Zusman Hospice
at Wexner Heritage Village. The bear now lives with Emily and her family - and is a constant reminder of this special bond. This experience inspired Emily to create the Love & Hugs program at Zusman Hospice with the hope that the quality of life for every patient can be enhanced with a comforting bear to love and hug. To date, almost 1,800 bears have been created by members of the Columbus community for this program, and have generated many wonderful experiences for the patients and families that are coping with a life-limiting illness. The program continues, thanks to the generous support of grants, donors and helping hands in the community. New bears are always needed and those making monetary donations to the Love & Hugs Program Fund for Zusman Hospice can be assured that a new stuffed animal will be made in their honor for a hospice client.
