Herbs have been a cornerstone of postpartum care across cultures, offering physical healing & emotional support through the profound transition into motherhood for centuries.

From d**g quai + ginseng in Chinese medicine soups to amla + ashwagandha in Ayurvedic preparations, each tradition holds unique wisdom for nurturing a mama’s body during one of life’s most significant transitions. In Western herbalism, we cherish herbs that tone the womb, calm the nerves & heal tender tissues—used in teas, tinctures, perineal rinses + soothing baths.

For 43 years—40 of those as a midwife and MD—I’ve turned to herbs to help postpartum mamas heal while honoring their connection to ancient traditions. But which herbs are best?

Here are my trusted favorites for supporting new mamas in those precious weeks after birth:
🌿Motherwort: The queen of postpartum herbs - balances big emotions, especially anxiety + irritability, while toning the uterus to reduce bleeding and cramping
🌿Red Raspberry Leaf: Helps the uterus return to its pre-pregnant size, provides essential minerals, and supports postpartum blood flow
🌿Lavender: Calms anxiety, promotes sleep & soothes tender tissues in peri-rinse bottles
🌿Holy Basil: A gentle adaptogen to support mood and mind in early motherhood
🌿Yarrow: Great in peri-rinse bottles or postpartum baths for healing tender tissues
🌿Witch Hazel: Relieves hemorrhoids (add a few drops of lavender for extra relief!)
🌿Fenugreek: Alongside moringa + milk thistle, supports milk production

This list is just the beginning—there are so many more! For recipes like postpartum healing baths, visit my website (avivaromm.com). Also, keep an eye out for my upcoming Mama Pathway Postpartum Care course, launching in June!

Midwives can meet about 90 percent of the need for essential sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, and adolescent health services. And yet, there is an urgent shortage of midwives to meet mothers' needs, globally.

Today, on International Day of the Midwife, the International Confederation of Midwives is hosting a virtual event, where you can learn from midwives and experts on the invaluable role midwives can play in moments of crisis. Register here: https://bit.ly/42ZPrCJ

Mercedes embraced her birthing journey with calm and confidence, welcoming her baby at home using Hypnobabies techniques.

"The support I received from my significant other was no doubt a key factor in bringing our baby boy earth side just the way I envisioned. He was there for me every moment giving my Release (Hypnobabies cue to instantly enter hypnosis), Relax (Hypnobabies cue to deepen hypnosis) and Peace (Hypnobabies cue for instant physical comfort) cues and reading birth prompts to me throughout my birthing time (Hypnobabies word for labor). Making sure I was listening to whatever track I needed, headphones charged, going to restroom every hour, eating and staying hydrated. He and my doula worked together to ensure my birth plans were followed and that if anything needed to change, I was making the most informed decisions possible."

My new blog-article on colostrum harvesting
>>> https://bit.ly/FirstMilk

+++

WHAT IS COLOSTRUM HARVESTING?

Colostrum harvesting describes when an expectant mother expresses and collects breast milk BEFORE the birth.

Expressing milk in pregnancy can ensure a readily available supply of highly nutritious colostrum is available to give a baby immediately after birth.

(NOTE: The NHS recommends collecting colostrum from 36 weeks’ of pregnancy. If you are pregnant and thinking of expressing your colostrum, do check with your healthcare provider first.)

But is colostrum expressed and collected BEFORE birth…
…exactly the same…
…as the colostrum produced...
AFTER birth?

+++

NEW STUDY:

In this case-study (n=1), samples of antenatal colostrum were collected from 19 weeks’ gestation to 3 months postpartum.

The mother was a “non-secretor” (like 20-30% of all mothers). In terms of breastfeeding, a non-secretor mother can't produce certain types of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs)

RESULTS:

The entire spectrum of HMOs typical of a non-secretor was already present in antenatal colostrum from 19 weeks’ gestation.

Read the full blog-article for other findings...
..plus some tips for new mothers who want to harvest their colostrum.

MY TAKE-HOME MESSAGE:

Obviously, more research is needed.

But for me, this could be reassuring info for mothers who want to collect their first milk during pregnancy, for whatever reason.

What do you think?
Is colostrum-harvesting something that you recommend (or not)?
Should colostrum-harvesting become more common?
Or is it just "something else for mums to worry about"?

Let me know in the comments!

Today after office prenatal appointments, I rode (top down, windows down) playing my favorite songs, to visit a client at their home for a postpartum visit. We visited, we hugged, I stood in their driveway and hugged my second midwife who is almost ready to sit for her exams- we spoke for a while in the sunshine about how important it is to bring the right energy to a birth. The last thing I said was " I mean, THIS was our work day. THIS. THIS SUNSHINE and LOVE." If, in one million options, I could pick how I make an income and how I provide service to the world- this would be my dream world, and I'm living it. I get to love people. I get to love people and families and babies and work hard that does not feel like hard work. I am eternally grateful for you. Spring will come. Spring always comes. And we will be here. When you call.
