Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. Since that first event in 2005, Walk with a Doc has grown as a grassroots effort, with a model based on sustainability and simplicity. A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Healthy snacks, coffee and blood pressure checks are an optional part of a Walk with a Doc event. The Walk added an Executive Director in 2009 and focused on building a program that could easily be implemented by interested doctors in other cities around the country. As a result of these efforts, the reach of Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide! Walking was recognized by the former Surgeon General of the United States of America as one of the single most important things we can do for our health. Will you join us in making health and happiness accessible for all?

As we wrap up Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we celebrate strength, support healing, and remind one another that no one walks alone. This month especially, we walk alongside those who have been impacted by breast cancer.

Did you know? Regular walking can help reduce breast cancer risk, support treatment recovery, boost immune function, and improve energy, sleep, and mood during and after treatment.

Take a walk this week in honor of someone you know who has been affected by breast cancer — and let it be a moment of reflection, gratitude, and purpose.

Earlier this month, Drs. Nilesh and Manisha Dave, along with other Dallas physicians, hosted a “Walk and Eat with a Doc” event at the Semones Family YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas.

They welcomed over 40 participants for a morning focused on the powerful connection between movement and nutrition. In addition to a walk, the event included a discussion on fiber and a whole-food, plant-based tasting with Plant Based Dallas. What a fun way to not only walk, but learn, connect, and enjoy a healthy snack together! 🌿🚶‍♀️

"Some people could say, 'You're just going for a walk, I can do that by myself.' These Walk with a Doc programs take on much deeper meaning because what's happening is that you're creating community." -Dr. Michael Rocha, Walk Leader in New Bedford, MA

This month is WALKtober! 🍂🚶‍♀️💙 The state of Maryland hosts a month-long celebration to highlight the many benefits of walking — from improving physical and mental health to building safer, more connected neighborhoods.

As part of the celebration, Dr. Marsha Seidelman hosted a beautiful walk through Wheaton Regional Park and Brookside Gardens. It was the perfect reminder that walking together strengthens both body and community.

We hope you'll celebrate Walktober throughout the month by taking walks and encouraging friends, family, and co-workers to do the same. Every step brings us closer to healthier, more connected communities. 🌳👟

"Walk with a Doc proves that health doesn’t have to be complicated. Just an hour or two spent walking, talking, and learning together can have a meaningful impact on our well-being. At its core, Walk with a Doc is about connection: to our health, to nature, and to each other." - Junnel Tom Japzon, MD, after hosting the kickoff walk in Surigao del Norte, Philippines, earlier this summer.

What an honor to have our founder, Dr. David Sabgir, speak at the Physical Activity Alliance Symposium last week! This group of changemakers gathered in Arlington, VA, to advance the national conversation on movement and health.

We're excited for Walk with a Doc's responsibility in the physical activity space - bringing together physicians, communities, and partners to turn walking into a powerful tool for health equity and connection.

Sometimes the secret to walking more isn't about counting steps - it's about enjoying the walk! Dr. David Sabgir, founder of Walk With A Doc, recently sat down with the team at WebMD to discuss how a simple change might inspire you to be more active. https://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/news/20250908/the-secret-to-walking-more-is-not-counting-steps

With step goals varying across studies, experts say it’s time to focus less on the numbers – and more on this underappreciated, research-backed approach: https://wb.md/47DUSLC

Our Story

Walk with a Doc inspires communities through movement and conversation. With an aim to make hope and well-being accessible to all, Walk with a Doc offers a simple, sustainable population-health solution. Healthcare providers ditch their white coats in favor of a ball cap and sneakers. There’s laughter, education, and communication on a level that is altering the healthcare landscape.
