Walk with a Doc was started in 2005 by Dr. David Sabgir, a cardiologist in Columbus, Ohio. Frustrated with his inability to affect behavior change in the clinical setting, Dr. Sabgir invited his patients to go for a walk with him in a local park on a spring Saturday morning. To his surprise, over 100 people showed up, energized and ready to move. Since that first event in 2005, Walk with a Doc has

grown as a grassroots effort, with a model based on sustainability and simplicity. A doctor gives a brief presentation on a health topic and then leads participants on a walk at their own pace. Healthy snacks, coffee and blood pressure checks are an optional part of a Walk with a Doc event. The Walk added an Executive Director in 2009 and focused on building a program that could easily be implemented by interested doctors in other cities around the country. As a result of these efforts, the reach of Walk with a Doc now extends all around the globe with over 500 chapters worldwide! Walking was recognized by the former Surgeon General of the United States of America as one of the single most important things we can do for our health. Will you join us in making health and happiness accessible for all?

Earlier this year, a woman attended one of Dr. Nick Johnstone's weekly Walk with a Doc events in Lancaster, UK. She was expecting a nice stroll and a bit of health advice. What she didn’t expect was to recognize a childhood friend that she hadn't seen in over 40 years!

Life took them in different directions, but thanks to this walk, their paths crossed again. They're now both regular walkers, and reunited friends.

Moments like these remind us that Walk with a Doc is about more than just movement. It’s about connection and friendship 💙

Who knows, maybe you'll meet up with an old friend at your next walk! Find a chapter near you at https://walkwithadoc.org

"Once a full-time physician on the edge of burnout, I was driven, depleted, and disconnected—from myself and from what truly heals. These Walk with a Doc events, and the community that surrounds them, have gently transformed me—not just into a better professional, but into a more present, compassionate, and healing human being." Walk with a Doc is much more than just a walk in the park. Our movement is grounded in four key pillars:

👟 Physical Activity – Walking is the best medicine! It truly is one of the best things you can do for both your physical and mental health.

💬 Social Connection – Our walks are an inclusive opportunity for everyone to come together, learn from each other, and build friendships within the community.

🩺 Health Education – Each walk is led by a volunteer healthcare provider who shares valuable health education and answers your questions.

🌿 Nature – Research shows that spending time outdoors is a powerful tool for healing and well-being.

We love this story from a Walk with a Doc participant in Malaysia!

"At our recent Walk with a Doc, we were deeply moved by the story of an 85-year-old participant, a father of 5 and grandfather of 10, who showed us what perseverance truly means.

He shared, “On my 1st Walk with a Doc, I could walk only 1/4 of the distance. I stopped walking as my legs were too weak to continue.

Moving on to my 2nd walk, I managed to walk 1/2 of the distance. This showed improvement in my leg strength.

On my 3rd walk, I completed the full distance without overexerting myself. I walked at a pace which I am comfortable with. After the walk, I felt more energetic and more refreshed."

From walking only a quarter of the distance on his first try, to completing the full route by his third try! His journey is a reminder that it's never too late to start, improve, and feel stronger.

He said, "I felt more energetic and refreshed after each walk. The friendships, the fellowship, and the guidance from our doctors made all the difference."

He acknowledged, "Walk with a Doc is for those who wish to improve their personal wellbeing and to be healthier and stronger. To age healthily and have a strong mind and body. It improves the overall strength of your legs and body. It also strengthens your heart and lungs.

On a social note, you will meet many new friends with good fellowship all around. It is indeed our fortune and blessing to have doctors who so generously volunteered to walk with us and also provided medical talks to improve our health."

This is the heart of Walk with a Doc, creating space for connection, growth, and better health at every age. ❤️

Here's to many more inspiring walks ahead. Join us!"

Our Story

Walk with a Doc inspires communities through movement and conversation. With an aim to make hope and well-being accessible to all, Walk with a Doc offers a simple, sustainable population-health solution. Healthcare providers ditch their white coats in favor of a ball cap and sneakers. There’s laughter, education, and communication on a level that is altering the healthcare landscape.
