Worried about political tension, or even fighting at your TG gathering this year? I have been talking with clients who are worried about this quite a bit more than usual, since the recent election. Here are some tips: 1) If you are hosting, you can certainly ask all people attending to simply NOT talk politics over the table this season. Yessss....that's allowed! Or...provide a space away from the table for those who look forward to these debates...the basement? The garage? 2) Think about and decide what your family GOAL is for that day. Most people simply want to connect and eat good food, maybe watch some football together, or go for a long family walk before pie. Say to yourself something like "my goal for my time with Uncle Joe is to share some of the jokes we normally share, play pool, and hear about his college days," or "My goal with my time with mom is to hit all traditions we love: make the turkey and dressing, have a glass of wine while listening to our favorite jazz." Whatever it is...ask yourself, truly, what is MOST important for these five hours we spend together. Likely...it is NOT going to be changing someone's political mindset. It's okay to say "I am up for having this political discussion with you....let's plan a day next week we can go out for coffee or a long walk together...because I love you and I only want to enjoy, today, the many things we have in common."

Have you ever heard anyone try to explain they live daily with "Spoon Theory," but didn't understand what that meant? Here's an explanation from the women who developed it to help her friend understand what it was truly like to have Lupus. I talk with so many clients about this, because most autoimmune disorders and some other illnesses/life events drive a person to live like this. Is this you, or someone that you know? Read this to better understand the mathematics of basic life energy...and just how precious it is.

Please take the time to read Christine Miserandino’s personal story and analogy of what it is like to live with sickness or disability. Click HERE to download “The Spoon Theory” in PDF format. The Spoon Theory by Christine Miserandino www.butyoudontlooksick.com My best friend and I were in the...

About Kirsten:

I always sit and stare at the computer for a while when I have to answer these types of things. But, I guess the most important things to know about me are: I graduated from Ashland Theological Seminary with my counseling degree in 2007 and was licensed by the state a month later; I’ve been married to my husband now for 37 years and we have four children, three in-law children and four grandchildren; and this is the second private practice that I have started and operated. I have an eclectic approach toward my counseling work that includes, but is not limited to, faith-based approach, cognitive-behavioral work, emotional processing, trauma recovery, mindfulness practices and solution-focus. I have gone to and benefited from therapy myself and therefore deeply understand the power in good therapy. You can learn more about my practice by going to my website at www.journeycounselingforwomen.com

My clients would tell you these things: You will find that the counseling belongs to you. You are paying for it, and it is about you. The therapy space is a protected, non-judgmental space and also belongs to you while you are there. Your boundaries will be respected. The whole point of coming to therapy is to have assistance moving from the “point A” you are finding yourself at, to the “point B” you hope to get to. It is about change and how to make it happen.

You will be listened to quite carefully and heard. This is because I will write a Treatment Plan that is personal to your journey, and to do this, I need to have a strong sense of where you are at, how you arrived there, and where you want/need to go to. We will discuss the idea of the “corrective experiences” that would help you get there. We will discuss and practice interventions: ways to change thinking and behaving. We will process trauma, dysfunction in relationships, and other experiences if together we determine this would be helpful. We will discuss self-care for your wonderfully-holistically-designed self. If you feel less than whole walking in my door, my hope is that you feel much more like you, much more whole, when you leave. I see people find themselves and get well all the time. I love my clients and feel honored and privileged to serve them.
