Meet Charlie!

Charlie was born with congenital heart disease and diagnosed with tricuspid atresia, also known as hypoplastic right heart syndrome (HRHS), a rare and severe condition where the right side of the heart is underdeveloped and unable to properly allow blood flow.

At just 6 weeks old, Charlie underwent her first open heart surgery. Since then, she has bravely faced two more open heart surgeries and a heart catheterization. Through every procedure, long hospital stay and uncertain moment, her family says she has shown them “what true strength looks like.”

While her family knows there will be more surgeries in her future, right now she is doing amazing and they are holding onto that joy.

Charlie's family credits the care they received at Nationwide Children's for helping their daughter continue to grow stronger every day.

"Dr. Galantowicz has been nothing short of a blessing to our family- truly an angel sent from above," her family shares. "Thank you for walking this journey with us, for loving our girl and for never giving up on her."

“The most rewarding part of my career is being able to address families’ concerns and provide answers. When a family has concerns about their child’s development, a hearing evaluation is often part of the diagnostic process. Whether I am able to provide clarity by diagnosing or ruling out a hearing loss, it is always rewarding to help a family get one step closer to the appropriate diagnosis and intervention.” - Caroline, Pediatric Audiologist, Audiology

Did you know May is Williams Syndrome Awareness Month?

Meet Matthew! Matthew was diagnosed with Williams syndrome when he was five years old. “It was a very scary time for our family,” his parents shared. “Learning about all the possible health concerns and what we needed to watch for felt daunting.”

As they searched for answers and support, they discovered the Williams Syndrome Clinic at Nationwide Children's Hospital, a place that would soon become an important part of Matthew’s journey.

“We were so relieved to find a clinic that truly understood Williams syndrome,” his family said. “From our very first visit, we were impressed by how coordinated everything was and how caring and knowledgeable the staff were. The clinic’s multidisciplinary approach gave Matthew access to specialized care close to home."

“On the drive home after that first appointment, we knew Matthew would be a patient there for a very long time.”

Matthew keeps busy with the things he loves most: sports and people. A passionate football fan, he spends Friday nights cheering on local high school teams and weekends rooting for the Ohio State Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns. He also participates in an adaptive football league. But above all, Matthew loves connecting with others.

“His favorite thing is simply interacting with people,” his parents said. “He loves making people laugh, meeting new friends and putting a smile on someone’s face.” Known throughout his community for his joyful personality, Matthew continues to inspire everyone around him with his kindness, enthusiasm and heart.

Meet Willow!

When Willow’s parents learned during a 33-week growth scan that their daughter had Apert syndrome, their world changed instantly. Apert syndrome affects the skull, face, hands and feet. It is a genetic syndrome, which is due to a mutation on the FGFR2 gene.

Doctors warned them that the chances of stillbirth were extremely high. Looking for answers, they asked to be transferred to Nationwide Children's.

The night before her scheduled induction, Willow’s mom went into labor more than two hours away from Columbus.

After Willow was born, she was transferred to Nationwide Children's Hospital - Toledo, where teams in Toledo and Columbus worked together to provide specialized care. After 14 days in the NICU, Willow was finally able to go home.

“Walking into the unknown was terrifying,” her family says. “They made us feel at home, explained things in ways we could understand and helped us keep hope and faith.”

Now 2 years old, Willow is preparing for her fifth surgery. She loves singing and dancing to nursery rhymes, playing outside with her siblings and helping her care team “type notes” during appointments. Courageous, feisty and full of joy, Willow is also working on potty training and getting ready for preschool, milestones her family once feared they may never see.
