-Gig attire for every climate. Some stages feel like a meat locker, others like a volcano. I always pack a thin black short-sleeve button-down if it’s hot, and long-sleeve shirts with a sleek black jacket in case the stage is freezing.
-9V batteries. I use an Ebow, which is notoriously power-hungry. But more often than not, I’m handing out batteries to bandmates. It’s a great way to earn some brownie points. Disregard this if you are the oboe player.
-Supplements. Collagen, curcumin, vitamin D, magnesium, acacia—and of course, electrolytes… my list. What’s yours?
Spares. I have spare cables, spare power supplies, and spare strings. True story: I once showed up to an audition and my power supply died the second I plugged in. Rookie moment. They were cool about it, but I ordered two extras as soon as I got home. If you’re a drummer, pack a spare bass drum pedal. In the words of Jocko Willink: two is one and one is none.
Phone charger with a super long cable. Hotel outlets are never where you need them. Running the cable through my suitcase handle is the only way I don’t leave it behind.
Gym clothes, shoes, and resistance bands. I usually hit the hotel fitness room, but if there’s nothing available, I’ll get in some push-ups, sit-ups, and stretching right in the room.
