As spring activities pick up, we’re grateful for organizations like Envision Blind Sports that help make recreation, movement, and community more inclusive.

Their mission is simple and powerful: to provide sports and physical activity opportunities for individuals who are blind or visually impaired while promoting lifelong wellness.

Access to recreation matters as well as being held to high expectations. It builds confidence, connection, and independence, and it reminds all of us that inclusion should extend into every part of community life.

This May, we honor and raise awareness for several disability, mental health, and veteran-focused observances that remind us how important accessibility, support, and service are in every community.

Mental Health Awareness Month — a time to reduce stigma, encourage connection, and make mental health support easier to access.

National Military Appreciation Month — a month to recognize service members, veterans, and military families.

National Speech-Language-Hearing Month — highlights communication access and the work that supports people with speech, language, and hearing differences.

National Barrier Awareness Day (May 7) — calls attention to removing physical, social, and systemic barriers for people with disabilities.

Military Spouse Appreciation Day (May 8) — recognizes the strength and support military spouses provide.

Armed Forces Day (May 16) — honors those currently serving.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day (May 21) — encourages better digital access and inclusive technology for everyone.

Memorial Day (May 25) — remembers those who died in military service.

World MS Day (May 30) — raises awareness and support for people living with multiple sclerosis.

Every one of these observances is a reminder that inclusion takes attention, action, and community. You can find official awareness resources and links in the first comment for anyone who wants to learn more.

This month, we’re highlighting the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN), a nonprofit run by and for autistic people.

ASAN works to advance disability rights, strengthen self-advocacy, and help build a world where autistic people have equal access, rights, and opportunities. Organizations like this matter because real inclusion starts when disabled people are heard, respected, and centered in the conversations that affect their lives.

If you’d like to learn more or support their work, you can visit ASAN here: https://autisticadvocacy.org/ and support them here: https://autisticadvocacy.org/get-involved/

We are very sorry.

It has come to our attention that there are around a thousand job openings right now in digital accessibility.

And many blind professionals becoming eligible for these roles are graduating from the CAT and WRAP VR job training programs at AccessAbility Officer.

And honestly…

If you’re still wondering whether this career is for you, we’re starting to get worried.

Not because you can’t get into this field…
but because you might be overlooking a career path that is growing quickly.

Every day you delay joining digital accessibility training…

Another beginner starts earning $25 per hour, works remotely, and builds a career that supports them and their families.

If you're reading this, there's still time.

And if you're still unsure whether digital accessibility is the right path for you…

We’re excited to share that we’re building a new partnership with a university in Ohio to expand access and inclusion for faculty and staff with disabilities.

We’re especially encouraged by the university’s proactive approach to supporting disabled faculty and staff. Through this collaboration,
we are continuing to advance empowerment and independence as well as the representation of these individuals on campus. This, in turn, helps to shift perspectives about what's possible when people with disabilities have the access they need.
