Like many Yoga teachers, I've felt very frustrated with the current yoga scene: the corporate-like yoga studios popping up everywhere, the lack of legitimate teacher trainings, the spiritual bypassing, and the misguided newer generations of teachers— just to name a few.

I decided to write an e-book to both educate new teachers and inspire experienced ones to restore the integrity, respect, and honor of Yoga in the West.

If you have felt misguided on your yogic path or frustrated with the current yoga scene, I invite you to download my free e-book: “How Yoga Philosophy Can Transform Your Teaching” to learn how you can transform your teaching and your yoga community.

I also invite you to join my Facebook Group: Yoga Off The Mat - Philosophy for Daily Life

If you're not a teacher, but would like to learn more about what's happening in the current yoga landscape, I encourage you to read my latest blog post, Why I Wrote an E-Book.

From the beginning, I knew it was a privilege to be a Yoga teacher, and this came with great responsibility. Integrity, honor, and respect are everything. But I’ve seen an alarming trend over the past six or seven years: Younger generations think there is some sort of fast track to becoming a yoga teacher, when the reality is that continual study, practice, and experience is the only way to become a true Yoga teacher. There is a growing misunderstanding between Yoga and yoga āsana (postural practice), which is leading to this pseudo-healing course of narcissistic navel-gazing & spiritual bypassing, and it’s only getting worse.

Head over to my latest blog post: “Why I wrote and E-Book” to learn how identifying this trend has inspired me to share my knowledge with & train the next generation of true Yoga teachers.

I want to thank for forcing me to write this book last year lol, for telling me I needed to write a book on Yoga philosophy after my first philosophy lecture for her YTT, for the inspiring chat on this topic at a London cafe last summer, for the extra courage and final push to publish my e-book, to my mentor Robyn and our teacher Chase Bossart who is the most brilliant, practical, and relatable Yoga philosophy teacher I’ve ever had the honor to study under, to all of my beloved teachers over the past 16 years, and lastly to all of my students and trainees who have embraced the philosophy and ancient texts of Yoga into their lives and allowed me to teach my passion and share my love for this sacred science of life.

The yoga world has lost a great one today.

I met Jason Lawner in his early 20s but it was obvious (even back then) that he was an old soul.

I had the honor of working along side him for many years. We were part of the original team of teachers when Corpo Yoga Studio opened in Spring of 2010, we both served as two-time Lululemon ambassadors in South Miami at the same time, and taught community fundraising classes together over the years.

We did not always see eye to eye on postural alignment or technique and yoga philosophy, as we were each devoted practitioners of our different Yoga lineages — his being Anusara and Ta**ra, and mine being Ashtanga Vinyasa and Raja — but we always had great respect for one-another and our mutual devotion to Yoga. In fact, our styles were so different that back in 2015 we were asked to speak at a conference together, essentially being pitted against one-another, but there was no scandalous debate after all because we always treated each other with kindness, respect, and were open to learn from one-another, like true yogis.

Jason was one of the most brilliant, kindest, and knowledgable teachers I’ve had the honor of knowing. A truly special human being.

In a city like Miami where yoga has become so spiritually bypassed and traditionally diluted — with shirtless male teachers selling their physique and thong wearing female teachers selling their ass to pack their classes — Jason had integrity and never sold out.

A teacher of teachers himself (even for being so young at the time) Jason walked the walk and knew the talk: he was quite fluent in Sanskrit, philosophically astute, and could chant and play the harmonium like no other.

Jason was a ray of light, an exceptional teacher of great integrity, and despite our differences, I was truly honored to call him my friend.

Jason, you carried the flame bright my friend, and now us, your friends and colleagues, will carry our flames bigger and brighter because of you.

In reverence, I honor and bow to you and your luminous light 🔥✨🔥

Rest in Peace and Power old friend 🙏🏼♥️🔥✨🕊️

The third kleśa (affliction) discussed in Kriya Yoga is rāga. Rāga means desire.

As defined in sūtra 2.7 Sukhānuśayī rāgah, rāga translates to “the consequence of a pleasurable experience.”

Many times, when we want to repeat a pleasurable experience, we will take actions or make decisions that are not right, appropriate, or correct. In other words, we want things in our life to feel comforting and easy, but when we take actions to repeat a desirable experience (and those actions are not appropriate to the situation we’re in), suffering will follow.

To learn more about rāga, how we tend to fall into cycles of harmful behavior, and how it affects us in our everyday life, head over to my blog to read more.

Asmitā is the second kleśa (affliction) discussed in Kriya Yoga.

Asmitā is defined in sūtra 2.6 Drgdarśanaśaktyoh ekātmatā iva asmitā, which means that false identity results when the capabilities of the seer, along with the capabilities of the mind, are viewed as one thing. Commonly translated as wrong ego — which is neither entirely incorrect nor correct — asmitā more accurately means wrong identity.

The word ego in the West has a derogatory cultural connotation of one’s own self-importance, an overpowering confidence in one’s personality. However, philosophically speaking, ego more accurately means the essential parts one’s personality used to define the many different versions of self — a conscious thinking subject. The translation of asmitā as wrong ego leads to misunderstanding of this kleśa. Again, context is everything!

Asmitā means we come from perspectives that are not correct to the situation we are in.

To learn more about asmitā, its context in Yoga, and how it affects us in our everyday life, head over to my blog to read more.
