Congratulations to our new Director of Consult Services, Dr. Chris Moreau!

As Director, Dr. Moreau spends about half of his time on the consult service, where he thrives in the day-to-day work of caring for patients and bringing the Addiction Medicine Consult Service (AMCS) to every corner of the hospital.

We are grateful that Dr. Moreau, who is a fantastic clinician and natural teacher, plays such a large role in UI ARC's presence in the main hospital. We're excited for this next chapter for him!

Thank you to the Iowa Heartlanders for hosting us as the Nonprofit of the Game last Saturday! 🏒⛸

We had a great time at Xtream Arena handing out naloxone and selling Chuck-a-Pucks! UI ARC now holds the records for most Chuck-a-Pucks sold in a night (!!), and we are grateful for the volunteers that made it a success.

We hope to return next year, and go Heartlanders!! 💛🖤

Courtney and Delila are representing at the 3rd Annual Spread the Love Resource Fair, hosted by CRUSH of IOWA Recovery Community Center.

We love being a part of this community, and will continue to show up in spaces where organizations, service providers, and community members are united under one goal: to support individuals on their recovery journey. 💜📈

To the UI ARC community,

One of the most beautiful things about the addiction and recovery community is its unwavering ability to come together in times of tragedy. When there is no silver lining to be found, sometimes we have to create our own; and that is just what the community of Clinton, Iowa is doing through this winter.

The community of Clinton experienced a devastating loss this fall; Cody French, 37, of Clinton, Iowa, passed away on November 17, 2025, leaving a permanent gap in the hearts of many who knew him. Cody struggled for many years with substance use disorder, which eventually pulled him into homelessness, though he was always surrounded by a community who loved and supported him. To honor him, the community is organizing a blanket and coat drive.

Below is the flyer, and here is a link to his obituary, written by his father:

If you are interested in contributing new or gently used blankets and coats, please reach out to the contacts listed on the flyer. If you are interested in donating from the Iowa City area, please reach out to Megan at 319-541-8841, who will help coordinate transport to Thomson.

Thank you to our colleague Jessica Raun for sharing this information! We will do whatever we can to support Cody's community during this time.

February is National Heart Month❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 and it likely comes as no surprise that substance use can have a substantial impact on heart health.

Enter the REVIVE Project:
This extension of the LIVER grant aims to connect patients with co-occuring SUD and liver and/or heart disease to comprehensive, flexible care. UI ARC's multidisciplinary team, including physicians, nurses, therapists, and pharmacists, will work with a patient's liver or cardiac team to develop an individualized treatment plan that aims to help the whole person, from mental health to transplant eligibility to substance use recovery.

Here at UI ARC, we take a recovery-oriented, person-first approach to clinical care. However, you don't have to be a doctor or nurse in order to practice speaking with inclusion and intention.

A person is so much more than their substance use, and they deserve to be treated with the same dignity, respect, and understanding as every other person in your life. "[Using person-first language] shows that a person 'has' a problem, rather than 'is' the problem," according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. When we use accusatory and othering language, it doesn't make a person more likely to cut back or cease substance use; it just makes it harder to ask for help.

Peer recovery support specialists make up an essential part of our multidisciplinary team. While no one who knows your story with substance use better than you do, patients tell us that it makes a HUGE difference to have someone on their care team who has lived through addiction themselves.

As SUD Treatment Month comes to a close, we want to remind people that will be here all year round, and for many years to come! 🤞🏽It is never too late to start your recovery journey.

Medication-assisted treatment is essential in a lot of our patients' recovery journeys, but there are not enough SUD prescribers in the state to meet the need.

UI ARC provides MOUD (Medication for Opioid Use Disorder) trainings for current and future health care providers.👨‍⚕️🏥 Here are some of the highlights:

- Presentations may be given to clinics, safety net hospitals, residency programs, and others.
- This training is free of charge; we simply want as many prescribers as possible in the state to be comfortable managing MOUD.
- The information will be tailored based on whether or not the audience has prior experience with caring for patients with opioid use disorder and prescribing buprenorphine. (All levels of familiarity welcome)
- The training does not expire, and it does satisfy the DEA requirement for practitioners who are obtaining or renewing their DEA license.

For questions and more information about our upcoming trainings, email us at UIARC@healthcare.uiowa.edu.
For additional MOUD resources, education and training options, visit PCSSNOW.org.
