I am proud to be a Speech-Language Pathologist!

👄

“I'm a Speech Pathologist." "So you teach people how to talk?"
No. Sit back for a moment and let me tell you what a Speech-Language Pathologist pours their heart into day after day. We help a person, whose brain can no longer send the correct signals to produce basic sentences, answer the simplest of questions so he can participate in social activities with others. We teach memory strategies to someone with dementia so she can remember the names of her grandchildren. We help a child on the autism spectrum with their social skills, in the hopes that the bullying will stop and they will make one friend before the end of the school year. We rehab someone's swallowing muscles so they can have a sip of McAlister's ice tea, because it is their absolute favorite. We give hope to the parents who have finally accepted their child is delayed, after the doctor repeatedly tells them he is just a late talker. We teach someone with new cochlear implants how to communicate without sign language after a lifetime of deafness being all they know. We ease a stuttering child's anxiety when they are preparing to stand up in front of their class to give a book report. We show someone how to apply a passy-muir valve to their tracheostomy so they can use their voice to tell their family "I love you." We have the difficult conversation with a family to tell them that grandma's cognitive impairments make her unsafe to go back to her home alone. We help a child pronounce certain sounds correctly, after years of others reinforcing the wrong way, when they reach an age where their impairment is no longer considered cute. We help a young, intelligent woman who has had a massive stroke learn to use a speech-generating device so that she can return to her vibrant and capable self. We think about these people when we're falling asleep at night, we pray for them, we spend time off the clock and our own money on things that we think may help them even the slightest, and We constantly put up with being misunderstood and overlooked. So if you know a Speech Therapist, tell them thank you and give them a hug, because I promise you, after spending their days pouring their hearts into others, they need someone to replenish theirs."

During these uncharted times with COVID-19 many states are having to make crucial decisions about education for the fall. We as parents, educators, and family members must remember that while safety is the utmost priority, so is a child’s education and social-emotional well being✏️📚. I know that these decisions that districts are making can at times seem unfair or even one sided, but trust when I say the teachers, support staff, therapist, and principals behind the scenes are trying their very best to put your child and their needs first. With that being said I know that virtual and even hybrid schooling can seem chaotic and fast pace💻. Often times the first thing to fall to the wayside are support services. Whether that be physical therapy, occupational therapy, reading support, speech therapy or others, it is SO important that as a parent you reach out for help‼️ During the month of August I will be offering ▪️FREE▪️virtual consultations with any parents interested in teletherapy options during the school year. As a school-based speech therapist I can offer support in so many areas that parents often don’t realize. Focusing on IEPs that target ✔️reading comprehension skills, ✔️following multi-step directions, ✔️answering yes/no and wh-questions, ✔️story sequencing, ✔️executive functioning skills, ✔️social thinking, ✔️conversational turn taking, ✔️speech sounds, and so much more! If you are interested in teletherapy services please reach out to me directly via 📩chelseajonesslp@gmail.com, visit http://www.apieceofspeech.com or feel free to drop a comment below ⬇️ for additional information!

*I am currently licensed in 📍Arizona, 📍Florida, and 📍North Carolina. (Soon to be licensed in Georgia and Texas).

PPE & Speech Therapy can be difficult! I have been treating with a face shield or a mask depending upon who I am seeing (mouth visible for my kiddos with hearing impairment, apraxia of speech, or articulation deficits).

With that being said I am definitely abusing my voice trying to increase my volume across 10-hour shifts. I’m also consuming far less water, and may or may not be drinking more Chardonnay after work.

Let us all take our own advice (and educate our PT/OT/BCBA/Teacher friends) to improve our vocal hygiene.

🗣 Optimize your communication during sessions to reduce strain. (hooray handy info-graphic!)

🗣 Hydrate!!!

🗣 Reduce your stress (well, maybe try)

🗣 Get enough rest

🗣 Replace that wine with herbal tea ☕️

So true to remember!!

So true to remember!!

Ok, now I wish I had a magic wand that I could wave that helps kids suddenly learn how to talk. But, that’s just not possible, and I think it’s important for parents to know this BEFORE starting early intervention. Now, do some kids pick it up really quickly and start talking pretty soon after starting therapy? Of course! But, for the majority of kids- speech therapy takes time- and most importantly effort! And when I say effort, I mean by the SLP, the child, and the family/caregivers! So if you don’t see immediate changes a few weeks or a month into therapy, that’s to be expected. Also, if you have not seen progress after months of therapy, please ask your therapist because many times there is progress being made that’s not easily observable to parents (like preverbal skills, nonverbal skills, and AAC)!

‼️ATTENTION ALL PARENTS‼️

Let’s face it, parents typically try to limit as much screen time as possible during these summer months 📵. You want your child engaging in socialization with friends, enjoying the outdoors, and being active. What if I told you that screen time could actually help your child maintain and develop their articulation skills. Would you believe me⁉️ As a speech therapist I have learned there are so many benefits to technology that allow me to connect and support children even when they aren’t in therapy 🗣 Check out some of these applications compatible with Apple and Andriod products📲. This may be the easiest decision you make this summer and some apps are even 🆓. These applications can make practicing speech sounds and drilling words less daunting and more FUN!! Not only do these apps support speech and language growth, but they also foster independence in children to take ownership for their own progress✔️

🗯Feel free to leave a comment below and tell me which apps you have tried and found successful targeting speech and language!

☀️Schools out for summer!!!☀️ One of the most frequent questions I receive from parents as summer starts to slowly approach is, “will my child regress over the summer from not receiving school based services?” While each child is different it doesn’t hurt to explore outside therapy services to continue progress over those summer months. Not only is this an excellent way to generalize speech and language from a school based setting to a home environment, but this also gives children consistency and an upper hand when returning in the fall. Home based services make it easy and convenient to put your child’s speech and language development first! 🗣

‼️For a limited time I am offering FREE phone consultations to discuss In-Home speech therapy services to see if this is the right option for you and your child. ‼️Also, due to COVID-19 I am offering Telespeech/Virtual services which make it even more convenient for the busy family summer schedule. Speech therapy can be accessed from anywhere at anytime! Call today or email me for additional details. I look forward to hearing from you😊

As an SLP I am always looking for new books, series, and literacy options to provide my clients with! One of my all time favorite series is Pete the Cat. In my experience children find these books humorous, easy to follow, and full of engaging illustrations! These books have a multitude of embedded social skill lessons within them. As well as offering tons of opportunities for targeting 'wh' questions and story retell.

"When children have problems acquiring language, they are at high risk for difficulty in learning to read and write, and to listen and speak. Across the profession, SLPs are asking questions about how to make our services relevant to clients’ functional communication needs. Literacy is perhaps the most important factor contributing to academic and economic success, and also plays an important role in social interactions. SLPs bring knowledge of communication processes and disorders and language acquisition to the literacy table. SLPs also have clinical experience in developing individualized programs for children and adolescents."
