We meet the 3rd Saturday of the month on the lawn outside of the Coronado Public Library. Founded in July 2010 by a group of dedicated backyard gardeners and local foodies, Coronado Home Harvest is a monthly homegrown fruit, vegetable, and flower exchange. It is not a new concept; neighbors sharing food has been a tradition almost since time began. Homegrown food exchanges now reach from Connecticut to California,
from Austria to Australia. A homegrown food exchange is a way of sharing what we have and reducing waste when we grow more than we need. In these times of economic challenge, a homegrown fruit and vegetable exchange is good for the pocketbook and good for the soul. Members bring their extra homegrown vegetables, fruit, flowers and cuttings to share. If you want to partner with someone who cannot harvest their garden, that’s even better. At the exchange, things will be sorted, bagged and redistributed to you to enjoy. If you bring a batch of cookies, homemade jam or other homemade food, you must include the ingredients to alert folks with food allergies. Those items will be placed on a separate table for members to include in their bags as they wish. Whatever you want to share is welcome, but food items are encouraged. The emphasis of the exchange is health and community. Please use organic methods when possible, and check with neighbors to see if you can assist them in harvesting their extra fruit that would otherwise go to waste. In addition to the camaraderie of the monthly exchange, talks on organic gardening methods, container farming, nutrition, cooking and other topics of interest will be presented during the exchange. Membership is free and open to anyone who has a passion for gardening, good food and community. CORONADO HOME HARVEST meets on the third or fourth Saturday of each month. Check our main page for this month’s date! Drop your goods between 9 am and 10 am and pick up between 11 and 12pm and maybe stay for the talk.
