Plugged Ducts & Mastitis?
Let’s talk breast inflammation and the BAIT protocol! ⬇️
Have you been experiencing breast pain, swelling, or even a fever? Did you know it’s not always an infection 🤔? Plugged ducts and mastitis are actually often linked to inflammation in the breast, which can narrow the milk ducts and slow the flow of milk. The way we approach the treatment of this has changed significantly in recent years.
BAIT Protocol:
B: Breast rest. Feed or pump on demand as usual. Do NOT nurse or pump any more than what is usual for you. Over-emptying can worsen breast inflammation. Avoid restrictive bras as well!
A: Anti-inflammatory support (e.g., NSAIDs such as ibuprofen)
I: Ice ❄️ Cold compresses help reduce swelling and inflammation!
T: Tylenol (e.g., acetaminophen for pain relief and fever reduction)
🙅🏽♀️ What to Avoid ⚠️:
🚫 Vigorous massage. This can make inflammation much worse😭.
🚫 Repeated “emptying” or power pumping
🚫 Heat 😬
🙌🏽Gentle and supportive techniques like therapeutic breast massage and lymphatic drainage may also reduce swelling, improve comfort, and support milk flow. These are NOT deep or forceful maneuvers…think super gentle, light strokes that encourage fluid movement toward the armpit or collarbone, rather than pressing into the breast tissue. These techniques are often taught by IBCLCs and other lactation-trained providers, and can be a helpful part of a lactation care plan.
Choline and probiotics (specifically lactobacillus fermentum and lactobacillus salivarius) may also be helpful. Remember to always consult with your physician before taking any new supplements.
If your symptoms don’t improve with these measures or worsen within 24 hours, be sure to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation!
If you’re struggling with reoccurring plugged ducts, mastitis, or breast pain, reach out to an IBCLC for a comprehensive lactation consultation so we can get to the root of the issue and formulate a plan to get things back on track. You don’t have to navigate this on your own.
