Opening the Conversation

Opening the Conversation The Thriving After Cancer Team is an Oregon State University research team focused on communication, and sexual and reproductive health after cancer.

The Thriving After Cancer Team hopes to offer an online community for cancer survivors, and those living with cancer, who are interested in news, research, and communication about sexual and reproductive health after cancer. Our current research aims to fill the gap in supportive care for young cancer survivors, couples struggling with reproductive and sexual health concerns, and LGBTQ+ survivors and their partners/support networks. Our long-term goal is to identify and implement effective and scalable strategies to support cancer survivors and those who care for them across the cancer continuum. Learn more about our current research projects at our website!

Research says that we can protect ourselves against cervical cancer by -
✅Getting HPV vaccination - recommended age is 11-12 yrs, or anytime before 26 yrs.
✅Getting regular Pap tests done - once every 3 years from 22 years of age.

Let us protect ourselves and our loved ones from cervical cancer by talking about these above steps with the doctor, and spreading awareness!

Transgender people face additional difficulties navigating cancer care, especially for breast and gynecologic cancers. Healthcare providers are often not trained on how to make this group of people feel safe and heard, and the little biological research on cancer and its effects on transgender people makes cancer care harder for them. Thankfully more research is being being focused on solving this problem since recent years!

Research says that communicating about cancer happens often and with different people in a cancer survivor's life. It is a repetitive process over years, in different contexts, and it important to acknowledge this and discuss it with health providers.

Reconnecting with my body, the new feelings and processing them is the only way forward - through them, past them, awaits a stronger me waiting to be acknowledged.
