Teres Minor Muscle & Associated Trigger Points

The Teres Minor muscle, a key component of the shoulder's rotator cuff, plays a vital role in arm mobility and stability. However, it's susceptible to developing trigger points, which can significantly impact its functionality and lead to discomfort in the shoulder area.

Symptoms:

Localized shoulder pain.
Radiating pain down the arm or towards the shoulder blade.
Limited shoulder mobility.
Discomfort during overhead movements or shoulder rotations.

Causes:

Overuse from repetitive shoulder activities, particularly overhead movements.
Direct trauma or injury to the shoulder area.
Prolonged poor postures, such as rounded shoulders.
Shoulder instability, increasing the workload on the Teres Minor.
Adjacent muscular imbalances affecting the Teres Minor's function.

Trigger Point Therapy:

Incorporates techniques like myofascial release and specific stretches.
Employs methods such as dry needling.
Aims to alleviate muscle tension and trigger points.
Focuses on restoring shoulder functionality and relieving pain.

Teres Minor Muscle Specifics:

Part of the rotator cuff group in the shoulder.
Assists in external rotation and stabilization of the shoulder joint.
Originates from the scapula and inserts into the humerus.
Innervated by the axillary nerve, with blood supply from the posterior circumflex humeral artery.

Therapeutic Interventions:

Target trigger points within the Teres Minor.
Enhance muscle relaxation and reduce pain.
Improve blood circulation to the affected area.
Facilitate recovery and restore shoulder movement.

Dupuytren’s Contracture

Dupuytren’s Contracture is a hand condition characterized by the abnormal thickening and contraction of the fascia, the connective tissue beneath the skin of the palm. This condition leads to a gradual deformity, typically causing the ring and little fingers to bend towards the palm, yet it remains painless. Significantly impacting the hand's structure and function, Dupuytren’s Contracture primarily affects activities requiring a flat palm, thus impairing daily tasks and reducing hand dexterity.

Symptoms:

1) Formation of firm nodules or lumps in the palm.
2) Inward bending of fingers, especially the ring and little fingers.
3) Challenges in hand-related activities like gripping or holding objects.

Causes:

1) A mix of genetic factors and environmental conditions.
2) Higher prevalence among those of Northern European descent.
3) Linked with age, smoking, diabetes, and significant alcohol use.

Conservative Treatment Approaches:

1) Physical and Occupational Therapy: Focuses on exercises and stretches for finger mobility & provides practical strategies for daily task management.

2) Massage and Stretching: Helps maintain mobility and reduce discomfort & incorporates deep tissue massage for palm and finger flexibility.

3) Splinting: Nighttime use assists in finger positioning & aims to manage contracture, not reverse the disease.

4) Steroid Injections: Alleviates early-stage discomfort and slows progression.

5) Enzyme Injections (Collagenase clostridium histolyticum): Breaks down thickened tissue to improve finger movement.

6) Radiation Therapy: Used in early stages to slow disease progression.
