This mama-to-be is about to pop! Up until now my business (and puppy) have been my babies, and I have never had a break from work since I was 16 years old! Maternity leave will be its own kind of work, I know, but will still be quite an adjustment! I will start returning from leave early this summer, and then will be gradually working my way back to a full caseload. I will miss all of my wonderful clients in the meantime. Wish me luck!

I’m so grateful this year to have had the opportunity to attend another amazing American Speech Hearing Association (ASHA) convention! Out of over 200,000 ASHA members in the US, I was one of about 5,000 who made the pilgrimage to attend our national conference in Washington DC. There is something magical about being surrounded by thousands of likeminded professionals! This event never fails to inspire and I can wait to try all of the new and fun ideas I learned with my clients! I took classes on the following subjects:
-Incorporating Mindfulness Techniques
-Stuttering Therapy
-Treatment of Speech Sound Disorders via Teletherapy
-Utilizing Games in Therapy
-Building a Private Practice
-Literacy Instruction
And more!

Did you know school based Speech Language Pathologists are limited by what they can say/recommend?

Many are not able to recommend medical treatment, or a possible medical diagnosis (some are not allowed to say the word Autism 😤) - that is well within our scope of practice to recommend.

It’s infuriating, but it’s the truth. So - if a SLP suggests you could possibly speak to your dr about anything, I would make that the same priority as if they said it more directly and urgently.

May the 4th Be With You! ⭐️ Celebrating the only time it’s acceptable to have a lisp beyond early childhood and the closest thing to a speech therapy holiday! 🤣

Motto of the day: “Recess is to De-Stress!”

One of my distance-learning support clients heavily relies on “body breaks” for self-regulation between Zoom sessions. This hammock has been a lifesaver for him as the swinging motion soothes and calms his nervous system after the sensory overload that so often comes coincides with technology use and distance learning. Thankfully, the air quality in Napa improved enough today so we could get outside and have some fun at “recess!”

Part of my approach to speech and language therapy is to tailor the experience to each individual kiddo so they are engaged and invested in the process. One way of doing this is finding books and materials that contain pertinent subject matter to the child's interests.

For example, several of my students have been fortunate enough to participate in horse camp this summer. To piggy back on their excitement, I use the virtual library on Epic for Kids to find books about horses that also match their reading level and abilities. We can then incorporate articulation tasks into the activity, such as finding all the /r/ words on each page and then practicing them each three times before we turn the page.

They were all excited to see Miss Brooke was on a horse this summer, too! Meet Dixie, everyone!

I will always hold so much gratitude for Brenna Marie McAuley and Kari Humphrey, as without these two incredible women this photo wouldn’t be possible. I’m so fortunate to have your support and to lend you mine, in both business and beyond!

I spent the weekend up north taking a much needed moment to slow down, decompress, and recharge my batteries. I find that prioritizing practicing self care — whether it's a walk through nature or a one night staycation — is crucial to being your best self.

How do you practice self care?

An articulation disorder may be present when a child mispronounces one or more specific sounds, and the error(s) is/are no longer age appropriate for their developmental level. They may omit the sound completely, substitute another sound, or produce some distortion of the sound.

For example, if a child cannot produce the /r/ sound when they are three years old, it is still developmentally appropriate to make this kind of error, so it is not considered disordered. However, once the child gets closer to age seven and they still don't have their /r/ sound, they would now meet the criteria for having a language disorder.

If you think your child could benefit from articulation therapy, or you're interested in more info, contact me at bestselfspeechtherapy.com
