Alex recently visited Rocky Mountain University, exploring their Doctor of Optometry program—an 11-semester, medically-focused curriculum with over 2,000 hours of clinical training and early hands-on patient care. A model of care that closely reflects what we strive for every day at Eyecare Specialties.

What makes Alex’s journey especially meaningful is his why.

Diagnosed with intermediate uveitis at age 10, Alex spent years navigating his own eye care journey—before having his vision saved by Dr. Eckroth in 2020. Now, as a paraoptometric technician here at Eyecare Specialties, he’s inspired to follow that same path.

Alongside optometry leaders from across the country, discussions focused on four key priorities:
• Addressing Vision Benefit Middlemen (VBMs) and the barriers they create to care
• Expanding access to vision care for veterans
• Protecting seniors’ access to essential eye care services
• Improving the safety and reliability of prescription verification systems

One of the biggest conversations? Vision Benefit Middlemen.
These third-party plans often increase costs, limit patient choice, and interfere with the doctor-patient relationship—making it harder for patients to receive the care they truly need.
