Our community is experiencing the devastating impact of three early learning programs closing. We understand how challenging this is for local families, employers, and child care providers.
It’s important to know that this is a state-wide issue, mainly due to funding cuts for the CCDF voucher program and reimbursement rate reductions. As a result, many providers are having to operate in a deficit, reduce staff, or close.
In Montgomery County, we’ve worked hard to ensure that local families have access to quality child care. If the funding cuts continue, we fear there will be a mass exodus of qualified educators from the field, a rise in unsafe care, and a deepening of the child care crisis that already burdens working families.
High-quality care is a major piece of infrastructure for communities:
▪️It enables parents to work or seek education and training.
▪️It supports children’s healthy development and prepares them for Kindergarten, leading to stronger, long-term outcomes.
▪️It allows employers to hire working parents and contribute to the economy.
Looking for a way to help? We urge community members to call or write local legislators and let them know how important funding is for early education. An advocacy toolkit is available on our website here: https://www.mcecc-in.org/advocate
It offers contact information and sample letters to mail or email. Our website also provides guidance in what to look for in quality care and other resources: https://www.mcecc-in.org/parent-resources
Thank you for doing your part to support early childhood education!
