Doane Dept. of Sociology

Doane Dept. of Sociology Welcome to the official page of the Doane University Department of Sociology. We also offer a minor in Sociology.

Doane University offers two majors in Sociology: one with a General Emphasis and one with an emphasis in Criminology. Sociology seeks to understand all aspects of human social behavior, including the behavior of individuals and the social dynamics of small groups, institutions and societies. Students studying Sociology at Doane learn about family patterns and relationships, crime and the criminal

justice system, social class, social movements, urban and rural life, and contemporary social issues. A sociology major provides an intellectual background for students considering careers in law, medicine, business, consulting, education, or just about any other profession.

Doane Sociology 🤝 MSS 2026
Three faculty and six students travelled recently to St. Louis to attend the Midwest Sociological Society annual meeting. Students shared their research during the poster sessions and Dr. Gentzler gave a presentation about student use and perceptions of AI in higher ed. We sprinkled in some fun extra-curriculars and of course found a way to make everything sociological. We are thankful that we are able to provide these meaningful experiences for students at Doane University !

As our week of activities honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. winds down at Doane, we share this excerpt from his 1963 Letter from a Birmingham Jail. Using a true sociological perspective, Dr. King recognized the interconnectedness of groups within a society and implored us to see beyond the “us” versus “them” binary and to challenge the often invisible social structures that may benefit the in-group at the expense of the out-group. Sociologists emphasize that humans have created these structures through our interactions across time, so we are capable of changing them to better suit the needs of all. This is a lesson that certainly holds relevance today.

Happy holiday season from your Doane Psychology and Sociology faculty! We ran a thoroughly unscientific study on ugly sweaters, social norms, and end-of-semester stress.
Findings indicated strong group cohesion and a statistically significant need for winter break.
See you in 2026!🎄📈

November 2025: NUSS @ Midland U.

We loaded the van at 6:45am and hit the road to Fremont for a full day of undergraduate sociological research. From Zoë’s poster session, to Olivia and Samie’s works-in-progress roundtable, to the oral presentations by Addison, Brooke, and Zainab, our students showed their work alongside undergrads from across the state. 👩‍🏫

Addison presented a paper she wrote for Dr. Gentzler’s Juvenile Delinquency course and walked away with first place in the paper competition. 🥇

Dr. DeBoer has taken students to NUSS for nearly twenty years, but this year brought a first: friends driving 1.5 hours just to surprise & support our presenters. really IS that kind of community. 💫

It’s been quiet on our feed, but busy in real life! 📚💻📝Between engaging classroom activities and discussions, connecting with NEW majors, reconnecting with alumni, and helping students prepare for an upcoming conference, we are making our way through the fall semester!

Opening Convocation 2025:
-the one where we officially matriculated the class of 2029.
-the one where senior (and StuCo president) Mo Smith reminded incoming students that it’s okay to change and to change and to change again. That’s how we grow.
-the one where President Hughes encouraged us to be fearless even when we don’t think we have much to contribute.
-the one where new students were dismissed to a tunnel walk of applause & high fives from the faculty they don’t know yet but who are already so proud of them.
🧡 It’s a great year to be a Doane Tiger.

Think internships are all about filing papers and fetching coffee? Not when you study sociology and criminology at Doane University! 👮🧠💥

This summer, Ginger is interning with the Overland Police Department in Kansas: getting real-world, hands-on experience in law enforcement. She’s gotten to observe and participate in a number of activities and has especially enjoyed learning from the department’s Crisis Negotiation Team, where communication and compassion are key to de-escalating tense situations.

This sort of experience is what makes Doane University special: a collaboration between motivated students, engaged faculty, and connected staff in our Career, Leadership & Service office helped bring this internship to life!

Recently faculty traveled to San Francisco for the Pacific Sociological Association annual meeting. We met up with Dr. Nathan Erickson (currently at Augsburg University), who presented on work he did with Doane students in 2023-2024. Of course, we couldn’t resist exploring the city’s layers of culture, history, and identity while we were there. From the conference hall to the streets, it was all fieldwork in its own way.
