AND WHAT IS IT YOU THINK YOU KNOW ABOUT CINNAMON???

Check out these facts:
• Are you aware that the use of cinnamon dates back as far as 4,000 years ago to Ancient Egypt?
• That it was a rare and extremely costly spice at that time and it that it was common practice to give it as gifts to royalty?
• That it is mentioned in the Bible numerous times as its ability to fight illnesses?
• And that of several different kinds of cinnamon, two are commonly known?
The two kinds of cinnamon that will be discussed in this article are Cassia and Ceylon and there are some important differences, in fact they aren’t even from the same plant.
Cassia comes from the Cinnamomum cassia plant and is also known as Chinese cinnamon. It is definitely harsher and less sweet than Ceylon cinnamon. Although both types have health benefits, cassia contains higher levels of coumarin (a natural plant component) that not only has strong blood-thinning properties, but is also capable of leading to liver damage when consumed at high levels. Cassia cinnamon is the variety that you find stocked on grocery store shelves, incorporated into baking recipes of cookies, buns and other baked goods and sweets and even sold medicinally. Unless the package specifically indicates that the cinnamon used is Ceylon, you can comfortably bet the farm that you are buying Cassia cinnamon.

With that being said, out of twenty-six of the most popular herbs and medicinal spices in the world, Ceylon cinnamon ranks #1 in terms of its protective antioxidant levels.
Ceylon cinnamon comes from the bark of the Cinnamomum verum or Cinnamomum zeylanicum tree. They are synonymous. The health benefits can be obtained from it’s pure bark, through essential oils, as an extract or in ground spice form. The compounds in cinnamon give it antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, immunity boosting and potential cancer disease protecting abilities.
In addition Ceylon cinnamon has the following nutritional benefits in just one tablespoon: 19 calories, 4 grams of fiber, 68% daily value manganese8% daily value calcium, 4% daily value iron, 3% daily value vitamin K and O grams of fat, sugar or protein.
Let’s look at some of cinnamon’s capabilities.
• Research has shown that cinnamon protects the heart by reducing several of the most common risk factors for heart desease including high blood pressure, high triglyceride levels and high cholesterol.
• Cinnamon also helps to fight diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels and improving sensitivity to insulin.
• An extremely high source of antioxidants, cinnamon reduces free radical damage and slows down the aging process.
• Research also reveals that another benefit from cinnamon is that it helps defend the brain against developing neurologic disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.
• The consumption of cinnamon on a daily basis protects dental health and naturally freshens the breath.
• Some studies have revealed that cinnamon may be effective in stopping or curing Candida overgrowth in the digestive tract.
• Cinnamon is also beneficial to the skin and hair by reducing inflammation, protecting the skin from irritations, rashes, allergic reactions and infections. It’s essential oils are used in some beauty products, shampoos and perfumes.
• Those struggling with common allergy problems can find relief when using cinnamon since it reduces inflammation.
• Because cinnamon lowers swelling and inflammation its found to be beneficial in reducing pain and relieving muscle soreness, PMS pain and age related pain
• Not to be overlooked is the possibility that cinnamon may possess the ability to inhibit cancer tumor growth.
• Cinnamon is also a natural anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-viral that boosts the immune the system.
In ground form, cinnamon can be added to baked goods, smoothies, coffee and other drinks, sprinkled on toast, French toast, pancakes and or waffles, cereal, ice cream or other desserts. It can be added to foods and recipes without adding sugar. As an extract, add it to candies. Use your imagination.
As an essential oil it can be diluted with a carrier oil and massaged directly into the skin for signs of skin allergies, reducing inflammation, swelling, pain and redness. It can also be added to DYI recipes for shampoos. For medicinal purposes use 1/2 to 1 tsp daily. Never ingest cinnamon essential oil.

Never consume Cassia cinnamon for medicinal use. Remember the key word is CEYLON, not Cassia.

For the convenience of Cross Plains customers, Country Comfort stocks CEYLON cinnamon in ground form and cinnamon essential oil.

INCREDIBLE HEALTHY BENEFITS OF PINK HIMALAYAN SALT

At the foot of the Himalayan Mts. in Pakistan lies a rock salt mine that is considered to possibly be the second largest mine in the entire world. From this mine, Pink Himalayan Salt is harvested and marketed as originating from a non-polluted area in the Himalayas.
In its region of origin, the salt is otherwise known as white gold as it contains some eighty four natural ingredients, including minerals that are extremely important and essential to our health. Some of those include magnesium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron and chloride. Many restaurants now include Pink Himalayan Salt on their tables along with table salt and pepper to be used at the discretion of their diners.
This pink salt gets it’s ‘healthy’ tag because it contains no chemicals or additives.

Beneficial trace minerals and elements are destroyed when table salt goes through processing. When salt is converted into sodium chloride, the body considers it an invader and seeks to dispose of it which is somewhat difficult. Our bodies waste incredible amounts of energy attempting to keep the fluid balance while the salt causes water retention that leads to high blood pressure. The water drainage used to neutralize the ingested table salt can also lead to arthritis, gout, cellulite, kidney stones, rheumatism and gall bladder problems.
However, Himalayan salt doesn’t burden the body and no energy loss is realized as it metabolizes.

In addition to controlling the levels of body water and regulating blood pressure, Himalayan Pink Salt also prevents muscle cramps, wards off signs of aging, promotes vascular health helps to regulate blood sugar, promotes bone strength as well as vascular health and respiratory function, nurtures the kidneys and gall bladder and regulates healthy sleeping. AWESOME!!!

And now to burst the bubble, it seems like nothing is the Utopia. This salt too can contain some traces of aluminum, lead and possibly toxins that’s probably the risk of any rock or mineral salt. In addition Himalayan salt may be good for you, but doesn’t mean you can overdue it as Himalayan salt is still a source of sodium and sodium causes water retention that leads to high blood pressure and heart disease. Himalayan rock salt contains only trace amounts of iodine but not enough to provide our body with it’s needs so you will need to get that from other sources.

Although the American Heart Association tells us that although the daily recommendation for sodium is no more than 1,500, the body can function on as little as 500 milligrams daily. Start reading labels on those canned meats, soups, sauces etc. and you will probably be scared out of your shoes when you guesstimate just how much sodium you’re consuming on a daily basis.

PINK HIMALAYAN SALT possesses wonderful attributes when used as a foot soak. It eases aches and soreness and replenishes the body’s minerals.

Country Comfort offers Pink Himalayan Salt for use as a table salt as well as in a blend with Epson Salts, Bergamot and Orange essential oils to provide relief from stress. OMGosh, it smells wonderful !!!

Today's Astragalus post is the last in this series. If you missed any of the first six posts, go to our page and click posts in the left hand column. We hope you have found the information useful.
ASTRAGALUS: SUMMARY
Astragalus is a plant native to the north and eastern regions of China with a long history as an immune system booster and disease fighter in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body fight stress and disease. Tremendous success has been realized in many research studies and trials and new information about Astragalus is coming to light all the time. It’s greatest strength is in preventing and protecting cells against cell death and other harmful elements such as free radicals and oxidation.

The most extensively research health benefits of Astragalus include its action as an anti-inflammatory and immune system booster, in slowing or preventing growth of tumors, protection of the cardiovascular system, regulating and preventing diabetes and diabetes-related illnesses, an antioxidative and anti-aging capabilities, aiding in wound healing and minimization of scarring, alleviating symptoms of chemotherapy, treating and preventing colds and flu and providing supplemental therapy for chronic asthma.

Astragalus has three components that allow it to have such a positive impact on human health. Those three components are saponins, flavanoids and polysaccharides. Each plays a key role and acts in different ways to help maintain and support various systems within our bodies. Saponins are known for their ability to lower cholesterol, improve the immune system and prevent cancer. Flavanoids provide health benefits through cell signaling, show antioxidative qualities, control and scavenge free radicals and can help prevent heart disease, cancer and immunodeficienty viruses. Polysaccharides are known to have antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory qualities, along with other health benefits.

As with all alternative therapies, it is suggested to consult with your doctor before using Astragalus.

ASTRAGALUS VI: ANTI-VIRAL & ANTI-OXIDATIVE
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
Because of its antiviral qualities, Astragalus has been used to treat common colds and the flu. Often combined with other herbs (ginseng, angelica and licorice) it seems to work better when used as a preventive, rather than before the illness takes hold. Starting a regimen before the colder winter months arrive may help to prevent or decrease the number of colds and upper respiratory illnesses.
Astragalus has also been found to be a successful supplemental therapy and natural remedy for chronic asthma. It works by decreasing hypersensitivity and reducing mucus production and inflammation. Preventing or reducing asthma attacks can help relieve chronic asthma issues.
Oxidation due to free radical damage is the main component in disease and aging. The flavanoids found in Astragalus possess antioxidative qualities. They work to control, fight and scavenge free radicals and help prevent oxidative stress. The component polysaccharides are known to be antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory all of which promote positive effects on the immune system and improve brain function which could lengthen life span.

ASTRAGALUS PART V:
DIABETES & RELATED ILLNESSES AND WOUNDS

Progressive studies have shown that the component flavanoids, saponins and polysaccharides help to make Astragalus work as an anti-diabetic (1) by protecting pancreatic beta cells (the cells in the pancreas that produce and release insulin) and (2) increasing insulin sensitivity, thus treating diabetes naturally.

Recent studies in humans and animals have shown that Astragalus can slow the progress of kidney problems that are very common in diabetics, as well as to protect the renal system.

Because of its anti-inflammatory qualities, Astragalus has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for treating wounds. Radix astragali (the name for the dried root) aids in the repair and regeneration of injured organs and tissues. There is also evidence to suggest that Astragalus can treat inflammation in allergic dermatitis, help treat hepatitis B by inhibiting the virus cells in the liver, prevent replication of viruses like Coxsackie B-3, which triggers a variety of illnesses from mild stomach issues to major heart complications, inhibit herpes simplex virus 1 and treat HIV by protecting t-helper cells to fight the virus for longer periods of time.

A 2012 study done by the Institute of Pharmaceutics at Zhejiang University noted that wounds treated with astragaloside IV (the active ingredient in the dried root) recovered two to three times faster over a period of 2-4 days. The conclusion reached was that Astragalus is a promising natural product for healing wounds and anti-scarring.

ASTRAGALUS PART IV: CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH

Your heart is the motor that pumps nutrient-rich blood throughout your body to supply your organs and keep them in working condition. During a heart attack, muscle damage occurs when there is a lack of blood supply and oxygen. Unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles have led to a greater incidence of heart disease and conditions. Not surprisingly, studies on cardiovascular health have also increased, and growing attention is being given to traditional Chinese medicine with a focus on Astragalus.

Damaged arteries are often the result of high blood pressure. A buildup of plaque that contains fat, cholesterol, and calcium can severely affect cardiovascular health. Over time, plaque can cause calcification, which hardens the arteries and makes it difficult for blood to flow properly. The buildup of plaque also narrows the arteries and eventually causes the blockage that leads to serious health issues.

Studies suggest that the nutrient flavanoids and polysaccharides found in Astragalus support artery health by preventing building of plaque and narrowing of vessel walls by protecting their inner wall. They help break down arterial plaque and encourage balanced cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Clinical trials have shown a marked difference in patients with heart conditions when given specific servings of astragalus root.

ASTRAGALUS - Part III: TUMORS & CHEMOTHERAPY
In Part II, we discussed how Astragalus acts as an anti-inflammatory and provides immune system support. Today’s focus is on tumors and chemotherapy.
When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, the ripple effect on the rest of their health and the traditional cancer treatments they receive, often cause more trouble than the disease itself. Chemotherapy treatments compromise the immune system, leaving patients vulnerable to a host of other health issues. Chinese studies show that astragalus improves the quality of life and the overall immunity of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.
The roots of the astragalus plant are thought to stimulate the production of interferon, an essential chemical that induces the proper functioning of the immune system. Interferon is also effective in fighting cell mutation and cancer development. Astragalus has been shown to help patients receiving chemotherapy to recover more quickly, to improve survival rates and extend their life spans.
Another scientific group study of patients with cancer-related fatigue disclosed that the group receiving pure astragalus extract showed significant improvements, and concluded that it is a promising adjunctive treatment for cancer.
Recent screenings published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology have touted the success of Astragalus in decreasing or eliminating tumors; and, in cases of chemo-resistance in treating liver cancer, it has shown promise in reversing multi-drug resistance, as an addition to conventional chemotherapy.

ASTRAGALUS: INFLAMMATION FIGHTER & IMMUNE SYSTEM SUPPORT

Yesterday I introduced you to Astragalus, and gave you an overview about what it is and what it can do. Today I want to talk about the first two benefits on Dr. Axe's list of ten.

INFLAMMATION: Did you know that inflammation lies at the root of many diseases and conditions, and is often to blame for the damage that is caused? Inflammation is an automatic response to numerous ailments and afflictions. Numerous studies have shown that the saponin and polysaccharide components found in Astragalus can help reduce inflammation from simple wounds to more serious conditions as found in diabetic kidney disease.

IMMUNE SYSTEM SUPPORT: Astragalus gained its reputation and rise to fame as an immune system booster. It has been used in this capacity for thousands of years; and a Beijing study disclosed that the reason for this is the ability of Astragalus to control t-helper cells 1 and 2, thereby regulating and controlling the body's immune responses. (T-cells help regulate cells that participate in immune responses and help provide anti-body production by other cells.)

Next up: A line of defense against TUMORS & CHEMOTHERAPY!

06/29/2018

Today I’m going begin a multi-part series of posts about Astragalus. I used to take it daily; and as sometimes good habits do, it just slipped through the cracks and fell off the wagon. Did you know it takes an average of 66 days to form a good habit, but a bad one (like forgetting a good one) can be cemented in as little as 2 days!
The allergens this year have been horrendous. First it was the tree pollen, and now it’s grass pollen, dust and dander. I think the tree pollen weakened me to make me an easy target for the grass, dust and dander because a couple weeks ago, it all came to a head. Stuffy nose. Itchy, red and watery eyes. And that nasty, rattling allergy cough. I do not take OTC meds. So I googled to find relief, and lo and behold up popped my old friend Astragalus! Aha, Yes! I remember that one. Couldn’t remember the last time I used it, but yes, I did remember it.

I immediately started digging through my boxes of herbals and hit pay dirt. Had about 6 ounces on hand. I poured a glass of orange juice, put in my dosage drops and drank it down. I’ve been doing this all week, but have to tell you that by day 3, I was all ready feeling better. In fact, I was feeling so much better that I decided to post about this little herbal gem. For those of you who follow us regularly, you know that my mom and business partner Ann is responsible for 99.9% of the informational posts. But my personal experience with Astragalus prompted me to give her a break and do this one myself. So, just what is Astragalus and what can it do for you?

ASTRAGALUS: Part I – What is it and What does it do?

Astragalus, also called Milkvetch root and Huang-qi, is a perennial flowering plant native to the north and eastern regions of China. It belongs to a very unique class of herbs known as adaptogens. Adaptogens don’t have specific healing actions, but rather help the body to respond to stressors, both physical and mental, thereby normalizing physiological functions and helping to balance, restore and protect the body.

So what magical powers does this plant possess to have such a positive impact on human health? The answer is quite simple. The plant is rich in Saponins, Flavanoids and Polysaccharides. Saponins are known for their ability to lower cholesterol, improve the immune system and prevent cancer. Flavanoids provide health benefits through cell signaling. They have antioxidative qualities, control and scavenge off free radicals and can help prevent heart disease, cancer and immunodeficiency viruses. Polysaccharides are known for their antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory qualities.

Dr. Axe (draxe.com
) suggests a list of TEN potential health benefits to be gained from Astragalus.

1) ACTS AS AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY
2) BOOSTS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
3) SLOWS OR PREVENTS GROWTH OF TUMORS
4) PROTECTS THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
5) REGULATES AND PREVENT DIABETES AND DIABETES-RELATED CONDITIONS
6) CONTAINS ANTIOXIDATIVE AND ANTI-AGING CAPABILITIES
7) AIDS IN WOUND HEALING AND MINIMIZES SCARRING
8) ALLEVIATES SIDE-EFFECTS OF CHEMOTHERAPY
9) TREATS COLDS AND FLU
10) PROVIDES SUPPLEMENTAL THERAPY FOR CHRONIC ASTHMA

In PART II, we’ll begin to take a more in-depth look at HOW Astragalus works in some of these situations.

INDEPENDENCE DAY

More commonly known as the 4th of July, Independence Day is celebrated each year on that date honoring the anniversary of the publishing of this country’s Declaration of Independence from Great Britain back in 1776.

A tip of the hat...…. no that’s not enough...……. let’s take our hats off and give a standing ovation to the Bell family, Ron, Sharelynn and daughter Sheila as well as to all other members of the American Legion Post 423 and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 423 of Cross Plains. This wonderful group of individuals constantly step up to the plate to volunteer hours of their time, effort and creativity to constantly remind Cross Plains that the freedoms being enjoyed by everyone in this day and age, did not come free.

This family is proud to be part of a long list of ancestors and descendants who served time in the Military during the Vietnam War, Korean Conflict, WWII, the Civil War, WWI and the Revolutionary War. One family member did time as a POW in the Civil War, my brother still alive at 95 years old served in WWII, a grandson retired two years ago as a Ltd. Colonel, my son retired as a Sr. Master Sgt. having made his military career with the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), and several family members were wounded in active duty in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Fortunately all came home, others were not so fortunate.

I was proud to recently advise all members of this family that an 11th Generation grandfather of mine who was a personal friend of George Washington, also made the Military his career, retiring as a Colonel in the Revolutionary War. Being direct line descendants from this ancestor, this created a path that enabled members of our family to pursue joining one of the most prestigious groups if they so desired, the SAR…. THE MANY HATS OF EUCALYPTUS ESSENTIAL OIL AND WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE A BOTTLE IN PLAIN SIGHT IN YOUR HOUSE.

At one time eucalyptus oil (eucalyptus globulus) that's a product of the tall evergreen eucalyptus tree, was affiliated with Australia. Now the tree can be found in several other areas around the world including India Europe and South Africa with Australia still being the primary source. One other thing that hasn’t changed is that it’s still the primary food for koala bears and for thousands of years has treated a myriad of health issues for the Australian Aborigines. Eucalyptus essential oil is not skin friendly and should be diluted prior applying to the skin. It’s for external use only through inhalation and massage and not recommended to be ingested!!!!
In spite of the fact that essential oil benefits are not backed by scientific studies and should never be substituted for prescribed medications, essential oils can be successfully used to support and complement those medications.
So let’s take a look at some of the ways research is claiming success with the use of eucalyptus oil, then you decide if it warrants a place in your home.
• As a V***R RUB INHALANT, when rubbed into the chest it can clear the lungs, reduce inflammation and bring relief to those struggling with conditions similar to tuberculosis.
• Eucalyptus oil is still till one of the best oils with the ability to STRENGTHEN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM. In addition to possessing the ability to intercept the common cold as well as the flu, it’s also used to treat conditions like acne, endometriosis and hay fever.
• Inhaling eucalyptus oil INCREASES BLOOD CIRCULATION to the brain that eliminates mental exhaustion and stress
• Applying the oil topically to the chest over the lungs will help to open up the body’s airways, LESSEN CONGESTION AND INFLAMMATION and help to increase the flow of oxygen through the body.
• Relief of both MUSCLE AND JOINT PAIN for those struggling with aches, nerve pain, fibrosis, rheumatism, sprains, stiff muscles and more is realized by just inhaling its v***r while it provides even more relief by reducing inflammation, swelling and pain for patients with knee replacement surgery.
• Adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to warm water and placing a warm compress on the forehead, REDUCES THE BODY TEMPERATURE when experiencing a fever.
• Eucalyptus oil contains antibacterial and antiseptic properties that help treat COPD, PNEUMONIA, SINUS INFECTIONS, HEADACHES AND ALLERGIES.
• Eucalyptus globulus as well as Lemon Eucalyptus are both EXCELLENT NATURAL MOSQUITO REPELLANTS
• It works wonders as a HOUSEHOLD CLEANER for kitchen and bathroom countertops and sinks when one tablespoon of the oil is mixed with 1 cup water and ½ cup white vinegar and dispensed from a spray bottle. And it’s wonderful for cleaning paint, grease and tar from your hands by just blending sea salt with the oil to use.
• In addition to all of the above, eucalyptus oil is a great ROOM FRESHENER removing odors with it’s pleasant aroma and medicinal properties.

The only thing remaining is your decision as to whether or not there’s room in your house for a bottle of this great essential oil that wears many hats.
