A normal brain F-18 FDG-PET scan can help rule out the short-term risk of dementia in older patients who present to memory clinics with cognitive complaints, according to a study published August 13 in Alzheimer's Research and Therapy.

“Brain F-18 FDG PET scans can rule out the risk of dementia conversion early with high certainty, allowing better customization of patient management regimens in the short term,” wrote Sebastien Heyer, MD, of the University of Lorraine in Nancy, France, and colleagues.

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease are a major public health problem, resulting in a loss of autonomy for many patients as well as generating significant costs (estimated at $818 billion dollars globally in 2015) for diagnosis and management of patients.

What Is the Difference between MRA and MRI?

While MRA and MRI are both noninvasive imaging techniques utilizing a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed internal body images, they serve different purposes. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a broader diagnostic tool used for viewing organs, tissues, and skeletal structures.

It provides detailed images of soft tissues, bones, and internal body structures. MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography), a subtype of MRI, is specifically designed to image blood vessels. MRA focuses more on arteries and veins, providing crucial information about the blood flow and the condition of the blood vessels. MRAs often involve the use of a contrast agent to identify blood vessels against surrounding tissues, which is less common in standard MRI procedures.

Can an Open MRI Detect Brain Damage?

Open MRI machines are a valuable tool in the diagnosis of brain damage as they provide detailed images of the brain using magnetic fields and radio waves. These images can reveal various types of brain abnormalities, such as tumors, strokes, or traumatic brain injuries that may indicate the presence of brain damage. MRI machines play a crucial role in detecting and assessing brain damage and provide valuable information for healthcare providers to develop appropriate treatment plans and interventions for their patients.

Catch it Early!

Cancer caught in Stages I or II has much higher life expectancy than one discovered in stage IV or V.
full body MRI picks up tumours less than a centimetre in diameter, pinpointing cancer in it’s earliest stages.

If cancer is in your family history, a full body MRI preventive screening test is the most powerful medical imaging tool available to you.

What Can a MRA Tell Us about the Brain?

An MRA of the brain is particularly effective in diagnosing and evaluating various conditions. It can detect abnormalities such as aneurysms which are weakened areas in the walls of arteries that pose a risk of rupture. MRA is also instrumental in diagnosing strokes, typically caused by blockages or bleeding in the brain.

Additionally, it can identify conditions like renal artery stenosis, where plaque buildup in arteries leads to the kidneys. By providing detailed images of the cerebral arteries and veins, MRA helps in assessing the risk of stroke, monitoring the progression of vascular diseases, and guiding treatment decisions.

What Brain-Related Conditions Can an Open MRI Diagnose?

Many brain-related conditions can be diagnosed by having an MRI scan. MRIs can be used to diagnose brain tumors, developmental anomalies, stroke, brain infections, traumatic brain injuries, multiple sclerosis, dementia, fluid build-up, and causes of headaches.

Is It Worth Having an MRI Scan?

An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan is one of the most trusted diagnostic tools in modern medicine and is used to detect a wide range of illnesses, injuries, and medical conditions. Compared to X-ray or ultrasound, MRI technology can create clearer images of the inside of the body and can be used on a greater number of tissues. However, it is best suited for soft tissues, like ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and muscles.

How Does Screening Reduce Cancer Risk?

Cancer screenings are used to detect cancer at a treatable stage before it enters a more serious or life-threatening stage. Certain screenings are used not only for detecting cancer but also for spotting precancerous cells. For example, a Pap smear is used to identify abnormal cells in the cervix before they turn into cervical cancer. Finding these cells and removing them can prevent cervical cancer altogether.

Regular screenings are incredibly important, as they aim to catch cancer at a stage in which measures can be taken to halt the progression of the disease before it takes an immense toll on the patient's health. In summary, screening is an important preventive measure that not only detects cancerous cells early but also increases the chances of identifying precancers.
