Parents—trust your instincts.
If your child is usually happy and easygoing and suddenly becomes irritable, moody, or “just not themselves,” consider having their vitamin D level checked.
Kids often don’t notice these changes in themselves, and when you ask, they’ll usually say, “I’m fine.” But you know your child.
I noticed this with my son. He’s always been funny, carefree, and easy to be around—but suddenly he just seemed off. I mentioned it to him, but of course, he said he was fine. The other kids thought mom was “just being mom.”
Once I finally had his labs checked, we discovered his vitamin D was low. After starting supplementation, my old kid came right back—and everyone had to admit I was right. Now he’s back to harassing me daily and being the funny, easygoing child I love. I won’t lie… during that phase, his mood was unbearable to be around 😂
Why vitamin D matters for mood:
Vitamin D plays a key role in brain function and neurotransmitter regulation, including serotonin—the “feel-good” chemical. Low levels have been linked to:
Irritability
Mood changes
Fatigue
Anxiety and depressive symptoms
Because kids are spending more time indoors and less time in the sun, vitamin D deficiency is very common, and mood changes can be one of the earliest signs.
If something feels off, listen to that intuition. Sometimes it’s not “attitude” or “a phase”—it’s a simple deficiency that’s easy to treat. 💛
