September Malnutrition Awareness

“As health care professionals, we sometimes forget that food is medicine — and malnutrition is very real. Nearly 13 million seniors worry about having enough food, and older adults of color are disproportionately affected by food insecurity.

Several factors contribute to malnutrition in older adults:

🔸 Aging-related changes: Natural changes in appetite, taste, smell, and dental health can reduce food intake.

🔸 Socioeconomic challenges: Rising poverty rates mean many seniors struggle to afford nutritious meals. (In 2022, 5.3 million older adults experienced food insecurity — USDA, 2025).

🔸 Social isolation: Loneliness and depression lower appetite and motivation to cook, increasing risk for malnutrition.

🔸 Increased health care needs: Chronic conditions and high medical costs can impact nutrient absorption, increase nutrient needs, or limit food choices.

Malnutrition isn’t just a health issue — it’s a quality-of-life issue. As professionals, caregivers, and communities, we must work together to ensure older adults get the nutrition they need to thrive. 🥗❤️”

📢 PDPM Conference – Day 2 Recap

🛣️ Full Speed Ahead on the PDPM Highway! 🛣️

Day 2 was packed with collaboration, problem-solving, and a few “roadblocks” that our team skillfully navigated together. 💡 The energy in the room was incredible as staff shared ideas, tackled scenarios, and left more prepared than ever to drive success under PDPM.

A huge thank you to our amazing teams who showed up ready to learn, grow, and support each other. Together, we’re paving the way for excellence in resident care. 🌟

Rug's Closed: Detour to PDPM

Last week, OPCO hosted a PDPM MDS Nurse Conference. Here’s what we accomplished on Day 1! Our team engaged with the new changes with enthusiasm, collaboration, and some laughter along the way. From hands-on training to innovative road construction-themed learning, everyone was “building” their PDPM knowledge brick by brick. The day concluded with a team gathering at Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament. OPCO goes above and beyond to ensure our MDS Nurses feel valued and equipped for the impending changes, promoting success and reducing frustration as we adapt and provide the necessary tools for achievement.

We’re proud of our staff for embracing change and prioritizing resident care in all we do.
