What I wish I knew about postpartum…..

Night sweats 😰

If you’ve had a baby, you’ve probably woken up COVERED in sweat 🥴

The first time I experienced it, I thought I was sick..

I spent many night tossing the covers in and off from being hot and then freezing from being sweaty..

What you should know is that it’s completely NORMAL and usually doesn’t need to be addressed besides with a shower 🚿 🤪

What is something you wish you knew about postpartum?

Did you know your infant can talk?…..

Ok ok….not talk talk but they sure know how to communicate from day 1!

Your newborns routine should be made specifically for them and your family!

Yes you can look at the cookie cutter routines online for a baseline but know that your baby may not respond and you will have to adjust clock ⏰

This is the year where we let mothers rest and a REAL REST….not a sleep when baby sleep rest because we know that’s not going to happen 🙅‍♀️

How can you help a mother after birth?

➡️Offer to hold the baby while she showers or takes care of any needs

➡️ Bring her favorite foods or cook a meal

➡️ Offer to clean up or do laundry

We’ve always treated birth like a sprint 💨…..

There is an enormous amount of pressure to heal fast, get back to pre-baby body fast, manage having a new baby fast and all of the other things society tells us we should be able to accomplish after birth….😭

➡️ Your body went through MAJOR changes over the last 9 months….heal and rest as long as you want

➡️ Your postpartum is forever so treat it like a marathon…slow and steady wins the race

The best thing you can do during postpartum is take care of YOU!

That may seem like a daunting task but when YOU take care of YOU, you can take care of baby 🍼

Your relationship won't be the same post baby.........😪

But that doesn't mean your relationship has to go down the drain upon baby's arrival 🚽🫣

Birth is the emergence of baby and parents. Parents weren't parents till baby and there will be adjustments on all fronts 🧱🧱

➡️By taking necessary steps, you can fortify your communication and expectations with your partner

➡️By establishing these habits early on, that could increase your relationship satisfaction post baby

You probably know someone that’s had a cesarean……

if you don’t, you are very very rare!

I won’t get into the argument of how some doctors schedule or recommend cesareans for no good reason 😩

The fact is! You or someone you know might get one and you want to ensure you are prepared 👩🏽‍🏫

Here are some facts:

➡️ Average hospital stay is longer than vaginal birth
➡️ It’s MAJOR surgery so you need to recover like it 🛌
➡️ You will need support from a family member, partner, friend or Doula for the first few weeks 🧖🏽‍♀️

If you are planning to having a C-section, how will you get your needs met? Who will support you the first few weeks postpartum?

{my birth story as a black woman⬇️}

It’s the start of black history month and I still can’t believe that black women are still doing experiencing disparities in the health care system….

My first hospital birth was traumatic….none of the nurses believed me when I told them repeatedly that I needed to push…took begging for them to check me…which they realized I was fully dilated

I actively pushed for 3 hours….I knew something was wrong…no one knew why they baby wasn’t coming out…my doctor hadn’t arrived the entire 3 hours of me in active labor…

My BP was dropping….my daughter was showing signs of distress…

The doctor finally came and realized that my baby was not in the correct position…why did the nurses not know? What could of happened if he hadn’t gotten there at that moment?

She ended up having to be suctioned out….

I felt ignored….not taking seriously and with very little care

The fact is…I could have died that night and I would have been just another sad statistic!

The good news is that as a community we are taking back our births! Getting more educated about our options and I’m loving it!

Hug a black mama today and consider donating to organizations that spread awareness on BIPOC getting equal access to quality healthcare…
