In moments of distress, we often default to two places: 1) back to the past, with self-judgment, regret, guilt, and shame, or 2) to the future, with anxiety, planning, fixing, and figuring out. Both are exhausting. And both are ineffective.
Compassion allows us to access a way OUT of this suffering. And it gives us this way out by providing a way IN. Compassion is showing up for ourselves with kindness and warmth. It is allowing it all to belong, and intentionally softening around whatever may be showing up.
The practice of compassion is powerful. I have found it to be the most incredible secret sauce I have yet to encounter. If I could teach my clients and children only one thing, compassion would be the clear winner.
