It’s World Mental Health Day.

I have a love/hate relationship with this idea of important things like mental health getting “a day,” “a week,” or “a month.” Yes, it’s great to raise awareness. Critical, even. But these are important concepts that underpin the very foundation of our lives, and giving them a specific timeslot on the calendar makes me want to scream a bit.

Have you noticed there’s not a “National Brush Your Teeth Day?”

This is because it’s so ingrained in all of us to brush our teeth daily that it’s not even a thing. Dental hygiene is such a normalized, prioritized, given in much of the developed world that we don’t need to raise a flag to remind people that it’s important.

So for World Mental Health Day, I challenge you to consider what it would be like for you to tend to your mental health daily. Even if you start with two minutes a day, like they recommend we spend brushing our teeth. What if you took two minutes at the start of the day to check in with how you feel? Sat and consciously relaxed your shoulders and did some deep breathing for five? Did some journaling for ten-20?

Can you imagine what a different world we would live in if everyone cared for their mental health?

Life lessons from kittens: Just because you got the invite to fight doesn’t mean you need to participate.

Some questions to ask yourself before you engage in a conflict:

- what is motivating me to respond? Does that motivation serve me?
- is right now- this time, setting, tone, my energy level, and my mood going to help or hurt this conversation?
- is the person with the invite able to hear me out right now?
- am I able to hear out them right now?
- is this even my fight to have? Is this invite misdirected and actually belongs to someone or something else?

Experiment with stepping away or not engaging and observe what comes up for you. You can always return to the moment later if you decide it is important.

- “I’ve been thinking about what you said…”
- “yesterday I wasn’t up for that convo but now I am.”
- “I’d like to talk about XYZ; is now a good time?”

Sometimes things go from a tense tussle to a productive connection with space and time. Allow yourself the chance to be surprised if it serves you to not engage in the moment.

Make it with a Sat am mini mindfulness vacation! Zoom in on the pic and really examine it. How many shades of green do you see? Name the plant life you can identify. What would their textures feel like to your fingertips? What would it smell like in the woods? What do you imagine the temperature is? Is there a breeze on your face? What birdsong would you hear? Is there a river flowing nearby? Allow yourself time to build out the rest of the scene in your mind using your five senses. Inhale some cool forest air, and let it rejuvenate you. 💚

Ugh- change can be so challenging. Back in the spring when I was trying to figure out whether or not I was going to start a private practice, my coping-by-writing strategy turned into a blog post! If you are facing the possibility of change in your life, I hope you find helpful.

https://yourtimetobe.com/tackling-a-big-change/

TL;DR version
- Face the facts and feelings you are having. They give you important information and point to next steps.
- Allow yourself to envision the change. Sometimes we never take action because we aren’t sure what we are moving towards.
- Talk to people who have made the move. It just feels like you are reinventing the wheel, but I guarantee you someone else has done something similar.
- Start with small, manageable goals.
- Reframe and problem solve your fears. Your fears are valid, and knowing how to cope with them empowers you to act.

Do you put pressure on yourself to keep it together? What would it be like to allow yourself to be as you are, and then care for yourself as you are? Can you imagine the possibilities of re-engaging in the day ahead feeling nurtured, supported, and grounded? Therapy can help you figure out how. :-)
