Quick List for Conscious Infant Choking First Aid

Remember these 5 steps when assisting an infant who is choking.
1. Check the Airway
2. Give 5 Stern Back Blows
3. Give 5 Chest Thrusts
4. Repeat Back Blows and Chest Thrusts
5. Continue Until Object is Dislodged or Infant Becomes Unconscious.

If the infant becomes unconscious, you will need to begin Infant CPR.

What to do if an infant is choking

Lay the infant face down, along your bicep. Use your thigh or lap for support. Hold the infant's chest in your hand and the jaw with your fingers. Point the infant's head downward, lower than the body.

Give up to 5 quick, forceful blows between the infant's shoulder blades. Use the palm of your free hand.

If the object does not come out of the airway after 5 blows:

Turn the infant face-up. Use your thigh or lap for support. Support the head.

Place 2 fingers on the middle of the breastbone just below the ni***es.

Give up to 5 quick thrusts down, compressing the chest one third to one half the depth of the chest.

Continue 5 back blows followed by 5 chest thrusts until the object is dislodged

The Seven CPR Steps

Here are the seven CPR steps as recommended by the American Red Cross:

Steps to Take Before Giving CPR

1. Check the Scene and the Person.

Before giving CPR to a person, check that the scene is safe. Then, try to find out if the person needs help by tapping them on the shoulder and asking them loudly if they are OK.

2. Call 911

If the person is unresponsive and it becomes apparent that they need help, dial 911 or ask someone else to dial 911. Stay with the victim until help arrives.

3. Open the Airway.

Lay the person on their back. Tilt their head back to lift their chin.

4. Check for breathing.

Listen for sounds of breathing. If you cannot hear any signs of breathing, begin CPR.

CPR Steps

1. Push Hard and Push Fast

Place one hand on top of the other in the middle of the person’s chest. Using your body weight, administer compressions that are 2 inches deep. Repeat the contractions at a rate of 100 compressions per minute. If you want a guide to work with, the beat of the 1970s Bee Gees hit song “Stayin’ Alive” is approximately 100 beats to the minute. Important Reminder: This advice refers to CPR for adults, not CPR for infants and children.

2. Deliver Rescue Breaths

Tilt the person’s head back a bit, pinch the nose, and then place your mouth over the person’s mouth. Make sure that it makes a complete seal. Blow into the person’s mouth until you see the chest rise. Administer two rescue breaths and then continue with the chest compressions. Administer rescue breaths after every 30 chest compressions. Important Reminder: Administering rescue breaths is not usually recommended for untrained public members.

4. Continue CPR Steps

Maintain the cycle of chest compressions and rescue breaths until the person shows signs of life. Or until a trained medical responder arrives on the scene.

F.A.S.T. is how we come together to end strokes

Learn the stroke warnings signs
F.A.S.T
Face Drooping
Arm Weakness
Speech Difficulty
Time to call 911
Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke.

It could happen on your street, in your workplace, at a store where you shop — anywhere. Your readiness to spot the stroke warning signs and call 911 could save a life or make the difference between a full recovery and long-term disability. That’s why it’s so important to learn the stroke warning signs and urge everyone you know to do the same.

The faster stroke is treated, the more likely the patient is to recover.

Stroke patients treated with the clot-busting drug IV r-tPA Alteplase within 90 minutes of their first symptoms were almost three times more likely to recover with little or no disability.
In some cases, a procedure to remove the clot causing the stroke is also recommended. Ninety-one percent of stroke patients treated with a stent retriever within 150 minutes of first symptoms recovered with little or no disability.
The thing to remember is that stroke is largely treatable. It’s a matter of getting the proper treatment right away.

Let's talk about strokes how do we recognize them?

My favorite way is F.A.S.T.

Face: have them smile and if one side is dropping that could be a indicator of a stroke.

Arm: have them put their arms out straight if one of their arm drops that could be another sign.

Speech: have them talk if their Speech is slured this is another indicator of a stroke.

Time: time is of the essence to get help quickly call 911 and try and see how long ago was the onset of the stroke.

Most days, people do not see what I do; it is not glamorous or stylish. It is meeting with people on the most challenging days of their lives, facing things that no parent should ever have to face, and making life decisions with tears and a broken heart. I have sat with strangers as they have cried in my arms so that they would have someone there to sit with them. I get texts at 3 am from mothers whose children are seizing, and they are frightened they won't live through the night. I sit and listen to mothers who are mad and frustrated with nurses, doctors, nursing care, therapies, and DME. I do not get paid to do this and rarely even tell people what I have been doing regarding families. Today I received this, and I am a tad embarrassed that my pride was stroked knowing that Children’s Medical Center Dallas sees what I do for their patients daily to make the world a little kinder and let people know they are not alone. Please go to my fan page Hope's Seed and like our page (maybe even donate), help me enrich the lives of children who are medically fragile and terminally ill.

How to spot a potential heart attack and what to do when someone is having one.

Signs of heart attacks are
Shortness of Breath
Nausea
Profusely sweating
Neck and jaw pain
Pain in one or both arms
Weaknesses
Pressure on their chest (most people say they feel like an elephant is sitting on their chest)
Back pain (women usually complain about their back hurting)

What we can do

Call 911 (most people will try and dissuade you from calling saying they will be OK please call 911 anyway)

Make them comfortable have them sit or lay down

Lossen coats, shirts, or neckties

Give a baby aspirin if they are not allergic to it of have bleeding issues.

Baby aspirin is the first response a paramedic will give to a person who they suspect might be having a heart attack.
