⭐ Here’s Your Cheat Sheet for Recognizing Black Women All Year Long

When creating annual awareness programs and events - such as those for Mental Health Awareness Month, Su***de Prevention Month, and Substance Use Awareness Month - it is important that they are inclusive of the unique needs and experiences of Black women. Alongside general programming, there are specific dates and holidays centered on Black women that allow us to honor and celebrate Black women throughout the year.

🖤 Planning Considerations for Black Women-Centered Programs:
1. Hire Black women and ensure equitable compensation for their time and expertise.
2. Reach out to Black women experts well in advance to provide adequate preparation time.
3. Ensure that the content is culturally relevant and reflective of the diverse experiences of Black women.
4. Incorporate feedback from Black women participants to improve and adapt the programs.
5. Highlight and support Black women-owned businesses and artists during events to foster community engagement and empowerment.

By thoughtfully integrating these considerations, we can create programs that raise awareness, celebrate, and support Black women throughout the year.

On March 10, the National Day of Rest for Black Women, an intimate group of Black women gathered to rest and reflect.

🖤In our moments of rest, we honored our enslaved grandmothers who were never able to rest. We expressed gratitude to our mothers, who sacrificed their own rest so that we could have the chance to rest. Our gathering was a means to liberate ourselves from Strong Black Woman narratives, and the notion that our worth is tied to our productivity and service. We rested to acknowledge our humanity and to set an example of rest for future generations.

🤎Both sad and beautiful, Black women granted each other permission to rest. Sad that, in 30 to 80 years of life, Black women had never been gifted permission to rest. Yet, it was beautiful to witness Black women embracing the gift of rest from one another, allowing the acceptance of rest from a fellow Black woman to empower their own rest.

🌿Our ancestors’ greatest wish was for us to rest.
🌿Black women are worthy of rest.
🌿Our rest is a reflection of our self-love.
🌿Our rest honors our ancestors.
🌿We rest to fully embrace our humanity.
