Yes! Echolalia is when someone repeats noises, words, phrases, or sentences he or she has heard using the same intonation. I suggest talking to the childโ€™s caregiver or SLP to help you figure out what the sound or utterance may mean for your student.

School is starting (or has started) for many of you ๐ŸŽโœ๏ธ๐Ÿ““

What can you do as a teacher, speech-language pathologist, professional or parent? ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

The most important thing you can do is acknowledge ALL echolalia as communication. It doesnโ€™t matter if itโ€™s in or seemingly out of context. It doesnโ€™t matter if you can or canโ€™t understand it or the meaning behind it. You can acknowledge by smiling, head nodding, repeating it back, saying โ€œyeahโ€ or โ€œokayโ€. From there, we can do the detective work and figure out what the child may be communicating.

๐Ÿ“ข We have a FREE Masterclass that is a great start for ALL school professionals. Sign up here ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ www.meaningfulspeech.com

Interacting with novel animals is one of my *favorite* ways to target language production in small children! There are so many amazing opportunities to practice early building blocks of both language AND speech sounds.

Here are just a FEW of MANY things I might target depending on what would most benefit your child:

LANGUAGE
Pronouns: I see ducks! / He's eating. / My turn!
Two-word phrases: two piggies / mama duck / soft bunny
Verbs: eat / sit / jump / shake / run / kick / touch / give / open

SPEECH
Animal noises are some of the BEST natural opportunities to target vowel elicitation. You get to prolong those early sounds such as "moooo" and "baaaaa." Does your kiddo produce these sounds on his own? Can she imitate you?

*NOTE: It's important to know that your child enjoys animals before attempting such an activity. Not a fan of farm life or zoos? That's okay! Maybe they like trucks or trains instead. In that case, Touch A Truck events are my go-to - you get to see fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, it's just as awesome.

The point is - lean into what your child is interested in. The more excited they are about the subject matter, the more they will try to communicate with you.
