After 51 years, Willie, a Vietnam War veteran, has finally rid himself of one painful memory of his time at war: a piece of gr***de shrapnel embedded an inch from his spine.

At the time, doctors told Willie they couldn't operate and said he would just have to live with it. And so he did—for 51 years. Most of those years, he lived in pain.

Until Willie took a trip to Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center – Fort Worth, where doctors were able to remove the shrapnel while they fixed a herniated disc in his back. Now, for the first time in years, Willie can walk unassisted and live pain-free.

As for that piece of shrapnel? He plans to put it in a display case next to his Purple Heart at home in Weatherford.

Thank you to all the veterans like Willie who have made sacrifices in order to protect our freedom. ❤️
