Looking to book an acupuncture appointment in North Texas? Here’s everything you need to know
by: Tyler Manning, Jenny Anchondo
DALLAS (KDAF) — There is quite a bit of talk behind acupuncture in the U.S. With many people being deathly afraid of needles, it is hard for some to see the benefits of this alternative form of medicine.
So, in the spirit of journalism, Inside DFW host Jenny Anchondo went in the chair at Sanctum Med and Wellness in North Texas to try it for all of us and hopefully alleviate some of those fears.
“The goal here at Sanctum Med and Wellness really, as my training is western med, is to really incorporate Eastern modalities and complementary alternative forms of medicine to really make that interaction that I have with my patients and how they live their life outside of the exam room so much more robust and continuing to optimize their overall health,” Dr. Jessica Shepherd, owner of Sanctum Med and Wellness, said.
What specifically is acupuncture though?
“Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine. It’s an alternative modality that is truly about creating internal balance. Balance in your mind, as well as a balance in your body. In Chinese medicine, acupuncture, there’s something in our body called Meridian Lines, and there are a number of meridian lines. With acupuncture, through the needles, it’s helping create restoration in the different Meridian centers, or energetic centers of our body that allows the flow of energy to go and to move,” Dr. Edison Tai, acupuncturist and Chinese Medicine Specialist, said.
This form of medicine isn’t just a tradition either. Dr. Shepher says that new research is giving insight into why this acupuncture is truly beneficial for our bodies.
“The research that is really giving the claims as to why acupuncture is so beneficial, especially when we’re thinking of chronic pain, and long COVID and fertility problems. So being able to use this modality as again, something that’s been researched, shown scientifically proven and the benefits and how it really works on the pathways, the neuronal pathways and regulating pain in patients who have that it’s profound, and I’m so glad they were able to join those two,” Dr. Shepherd said.

Acupuncture for Rheumatism - Severe Gout? Acupuncture works wonders!
The rheumatism is called "Bi syndrome" in traditional Chinese medicine. Patient in the case was Yangming dry gold (Lung) plus Linyangming dry gold, after using TCM diagnosis methods inspection, auscultation and olfaction , interrogation, and palpation.
Treatment was insert needle from Yangming channel, and then Baihui (Du-20) leads Yangming. In addition, gout, rheumatism, meridian turbidity and silt were infested, and the onset site was the dorsum of the left foot. So Taiyin, Taiyin, and Shaoyin are selected. Combined with the Neijing principles, took Taiyin, Taiyang, Shaoyin, and Yangming on Xiaochi's head, and lead Yangming from Baihui.
Immediately after the needle, the patient felt that the pain on the back of the left foot was significantly relieved, and his walking was basically normal. After 30 minutes of needle retention, there was only a little pain left, the swelling also subsided, and the local redness and heat were significantly reduced (as shown in the picture below), which did not affect walking at all.
In addition acute gout, other rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis, etc., clinically use syndrome differentiation, analyze the etiology of time, people, and evil, acupuncture combined with oral administration of traditional Chinese medicine, can significantly reduce the pain of patients, shorten the course of disease, and increase the curative effect.

Acupuncture | Q&A
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles through your skin at strategic points on your body. A key component of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain. Increasingly, it is being used for overall wellness, including stress management.
Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as chi or qi (chee) — believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will re-balance.
In contrast, many Western practitioners view the acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue. Some believe that this stimulation boosts your body's natural painkillers.

Acupressure is based on the concept of life energy which flows through "meridians" in the body. In treatment, physical pressure is applied to acupuncture points with the aim of clearing blockages in these meridians.
Medical studies have suggested that acupressure may be effective at helping manage nausea and vomiting, for helping low back pain, tension headaches, and stomach ache.

Cupping therapy is a local suction is created on the skin with the application of heated or vacuum cups.
In Chinese, cupping is known as "pulling-up jars" (Chinese: 拔罐; pinyin: báguàn). According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), cupping is done to dispel stagnation (stagnant blood and lymph), thereby improving qi flow, in order to treat respiratory diseases such as the common cold, pneumonia, and bronchitis. Cupping also is used on back, neck, shoulder, and other musculoskeletal conditions.

Acupuncture is the insertion of needles into superficial structures of the body (skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscles) – usually at acupuncture points (Acupoints) – and their subsequent manipulation; this aims at influencing the flow of qi. According to TCM it relieves pain and treats (and prevents) various diseases.
The World Health Organisation recommends acupuncture for these diseases, symptoms or conditions, because acupuncture has been prove[d] – through controlled trials – to be an effective treatment:
• Pain Relief:
Headache/ Facial (TMJ)/ Frozen shoulder/ Tennis elbow/ Carpal tunnel syndrome / Sciatica/ Low Back/ Knee
• Rheumatoid arthritis/ Osteoarthritis
• Follow-up Care after Cancer Treatment
• Hypertension/ Hypotension
• Stroke/ Bell's Palsy/ Neuropathy
• Anxiety & Depression/ Insomnia
