We are thrilled to introduce February’s therapist, Dr. Elise Cantu, PT, DPT -
Q: What is your practice setting and what population do you treat?
A: Fort Worth Cancer Care specializes in helping people reclaim their health and wellness after a cancer diagnosis. We work with people who have experienced cancer and/or lymphedema, including pediatric lymphedema!
Q: What tip can you give other lymphedema therapists for treating cancer-related lymphedema?
A: Understand the side effects of cancer treatment. Side effects can be wide-ranging, affecting patients during treatment and even months to years after treatment is done. These side effects can complicate lymphedema treatment.
Q: What is one thing you wish everyone knew about cancer-related lymphedema?
A: Every person diagnosed with cancer should receive a baseline functional assessment, which may include measurements to monitor for lymphedema. Lymphedema starts affecting a person's body before they even know it's happening, so it is critical to have these baseline measurements. This helps us diagnose and treat lymphedema earlier.
Q: What is your experience with providing patients pneumatic compression to treat their symptoms at home?
A: I frequently refer patients for at-home pneumatic compression. The most important thing to remember is if your device doesn't work for you, tell your therapist! We want to help you succeed, which may mean trying different options to find the best fit for you.
Thank you Dr. Cantu for your dedication to working with patients living with lymphedema!
