We are thrilled to introduce February’s therapist, Dr. Elise Cantu, PT, DPT -

Q: What is your practice setting and what population do you treat?
A: Fort Worth Cancer Care specializes in helping people reclaim their health and wellness after a cancer diagnosis. We work with people who have experienced cancer and/or lymphedema, including pediatric lymphedema!

Q: What tip can you give other lymphedema therapists for treating cancer-related lymphedema?
A: Understand the side effects of cancer treatment. Side effects can be wide-ranging, affecting patients during treatment and even months to years after treatment is done. These side effects can complicate lymphedema treatment.

Q: What is one thing you wish everyone knew about cancer-related lymphedema?
A: Every person diagnosed with cancer should receive a baseline functional assessment, which may include measurements to monitor for lymphedema. Lymphedema starts affecting a person's body before they even know it's happening, so it is critical to have these baseline measurements. This helps us diagnose and treat lymphedema earlier.

Q: What is your experience with providing patients pneumatic compression to treat their symptoms at home?
A:  I frequently refer patients for at-home pneumatic compression. The most important thing to remember is if your device doesn't work for you, tell your therapist! We want to help you succeed, which may mean trying different options to find the best fit for you.

Thank you Dr. Cantu for your dedication to working with patients living with lymphedema!

Why do most "return to pre-cancer life" plans fail? 🙉

You might have a laundry list of reasons in your head (and they are all probably great), BUT the number one reason is this:

💥 Most people are still dealing with significant side effects from treatment. It's not them, it's the side effects keeping them from doing what they want & need to do.💥

And I get it. I’ve seen the frustration again & again.
The thing is, you don’t have to stay there.

Oncology physical therapy helps people improve these side effects, even years after treatment finished, so that they can have more energy, be stronger, manage chronic issues, & be more in control, so they can do what's important to them.

DM me so we can talk about what’s keeping you stuck.

There’s a lot of bad advice out there about how to physically recover from cancer treatment.

It can be overwhelming to begin to sift through the bad advice and the good advice out there so you should always consider the following things:

1. Source: Who is telling you this advice, and what makes them a credible source?

2. Facts: Can their advice be proven?

3. Relatability: Can their advice be related to your specific diagnosis?

Now that I have been in oncology physical therapy awhile, I wish I had followed this advice earlier on: "Be present for the patient in front of you." Though I heard the advice, I didn’t fully consider its impact until much later on in my practice!

If I would have followed the advice to be present, it would have saved me time, frustration and so many headaches!

❤️‍🔥Double-tap if you can relate!

Is there any greater feeling than crossing items off your to-do list?

👈 Follow

Sometimes I put the teeniest, tiniest little tasks on my to-do list just, so I’ll have something to cross off✍️.

For example, I have been known to put items such as "unpack new supplies," "do clinic laundry," or "check email" on my list.

I just love that sense of accomplishment ❤️.

When I cross a BIG task off my list, it just magnifies that feeling even more 💖.

Just this past week, I finally announced & launched Fort Worth Cancer Care to my community, ✔️ and it felt so good because it's something I've been working on behind the scenes for over a year!

What task-- big or small-- did you accomplish this week ⭐?

👀Time for a checkup! Are you ready? 👇
But first, 👈FOLLOW

You may go to get regular checkups of your body, but what about your mind?

Let’s definitely normalize regular mental-health check ins, starting with a few questions for you:

✔️ Take a deep breath - how does this deep breath make you feel?
✔️ Stop clenching your muscles - did you feel a particular muscle or joint relax just then?
✔️ What's stressing you out right now?

Remember: It's okay to get help!
Don’t let your busy schedule stop you from seeking support.

💛Drop your favorite emoji in the comments if you consistently conduct regular mental health check ins.💛
