Birth is not one-size-fits-all.

In today’s medical model of care, prenatal visits are often rushed, and the focus is more on following standardized protocols than addressing your unique needs and desires. Many expecting families feel like just another number, with limited time to ask questions, share concerns, or make informed decisions that align with their values. This ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach can leave parents feeling disconnected from the birth experience they envision.

At Heart of Texas Midwifery, we believe birth should be as unique as you are. Our midwifery model of care is designed to offer personalized, compassionate support that honors your individual journey. We take the time to get to know you, listen to your concerns, and tailor prenatal care to what’s best for YOU and your baby. You deserve to be an active participant in your care, not just a patient.

Labor inductions are rising, especially for first-time moms. But with induction often comes more interventions, longer labor, and increased medical procedures. It’s no wonder more and more are choosing home birth. Home births not only have lower induction rates, but they also give you more control and the chance to let labor unfold naturally. The rate of home births has increased by 60% in the past seven years—maybe it’s time to consider why.

In today’s world, we often prioritize efficiency over everything else. But birth doesn’t work that way. It’s not about fitting into a schedule or doing things the “easy” way. Inductions and interventions often happen because we are trying to control what is naturally uncontrollable.

At the heart of it, babies know exactly when and how they are meant to arrive.

Your provider’s philosophy on birth can have a profound impact on the care you receive and how you prepare for this life-changing experience. Whether birth is viewed as a natural process or a medical event, their approach influences everything — from the advice you get to the options you consider.

But it’s not just your provider. The people you surround yourself with and the information you take in also play a major role in shaping your mindset and preparation.

If you’re planning a home birth, being intentional starts long before labor begins. Surround yourself with supportive voices, watch empowering home birth documentaries like ‘The Business of Being Born,’ read books such as Ina May Gaskin’s ‘Guide to Childbirth,’ and take a childbirth education class that aligns with your values. As you prepare, create a calm, safe environment for your birth. Every detail, from your mindset to your space, can make a difference. How are you being intentional in your home birth journey?

Did you know that only about 5% of babies are born on their “due date”? The concept of a single due date is outdated and not evidence-based. Instead, we should focus on a “due range”—a period during which birth is most likely to happen naturally.

The average first-time mom gives birth around 41 weeks and 1 day. The idea of a set due date can cause unnecessary stress and possibly lead to interventions.

At Heart of Texas Midwifery, we believe in supporting labor as a normal, physiological process, stepping in with intervention only when there’s a clear indication. Our goal is to empower families to trust in the natural process and to provide safe, evidence-based care throughout the journey.

There’s a common myth that midwives, especially Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs), are not trained to handle emergencies during childbirth. Let’s set the record straight.

MYTH: Midwives are not trained medical professionals and cannot handle emergencies during childbirth.

FACT: Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) are highly trained experts in managing low-risk pregnancies and births.

They have the skills, knowledge, and tools to handle a wide range of situations and provide immediate care when needed.

CPMs are trained to recognize complications early and work collaboratively with obstetricians and hospitals to ensure the safety of both mother and baby. Your birth experience is their top priority, and they are committed to providing safe, empowering, and compassionate care.
