Legacy of Hope Health and Wellness Center announces Crowdfunding Campaign to Revive South Dallas

Help us realize the dream of revitalizing South Dallas healthcare

PRLog -- Legacy of Hope DFW announces that it is raising funds via GoFundMe to raise $1,000,000 to assist with the funding of renovating the existing facility that offers state
of the art services: Urgent Care, Podiatry, Dentistry, Psychiatry, Pharmacy, Medical Assistant School, Dental Assistant School. Legacy of Hope Health and Wellness Center (formerly the Forest Avenue Hospital) was established by a handful of black doctors in the early 1960s, at a time when racial segregation was still commonplace across the United States. Our vision is to continue the legacy of Dr. Edward J.
Mason and Dr. Emmitt J. Conrad and a handful of other black doctors who built a facility (Forest Ave. Hospital) that once housed one of Dallas' few black-owned and operated hospitals.

Dr. Edythe Michelle Morgan is on a mission to reopen the two-story structure at 2516 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in South Dallas as a community wellness center that offers a range of specialty medical services. "It's not just about business. This is home to me," Morgan said. The redevelopment of the
18,000-square-foot former hospital is personal for her, an African- American woman who's frustrated that the South Dallas community where she grew up has become a "medical desert ", a term Morgan uses to describe the severe shortage of physicians practicing in the neighborhood, which is also burdened with the county's highest rates of chronic disease.

Revival of Old MLK Boulevard Hospital Building

Revival of Old MLK Boulevard Hospital Building by Ken Kalthoff NBC5 NBC DFW A North Texas dentist has purchased the old Forest Avenue Hospital building on Martin Luther King Boulevard with plans to turn it into a community health clinic.

Dr. Michelle Morgan grew up in the neighborhood and said she wanted to give back by providing service to the area where health care is scarce.

“My idea by looking at it was just clean it up, paint it, put some new floors in and just open it as it was,” Morgan said. “But that of course was before I entered the building and saw that it was totally gutted.” https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/Revival-of-Old-MLK-Boulevard-Hospital-Building-500723161.html

Reviving a Historic Dallas Hospital | National Trust for Historic Preservation

LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR HISTORY - Reviving a Historic Dallas Hospital by the National Trust for Historic Preservation #LegacyofHope #ReviveSouthDallas

The two-story brick building on a raggedy stretch of Martin Luther King, Jr., Boulevard in South Dallas is an undistinguished shabby box. Simple murals of African American nurses and doctors painted on the street-facing wall are worn. Windows are boarded up. Double doors are held closed with a rusty chain and padlock.

Little about this the 18,000-square-foot structure seems worth saving, but for its history. At one time, this was the Forest Avenue Hospital, one of six African American-owned hospitals in the city. The facility, which went through various iterations over the years, closed for good in 1984. Now, thanks to the daughter of South Dallas, it is getting a half-million dollar makeover to become a community wellness center for an underserved community.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
Legacy of Hope Health and Wellness Center (formerly the Forest Avenue Hospital) was established by a handful of black doctors in the early 1960s, at a time when racial segregation was still commonplace across the United States.

At the turn of the 20th century, Forest Avenue — now Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd — was Dallas’ southern city limit, an unincorporated area where black residents were allowed to buy land. Black doctors often could not work in whites-only facilities, and many hospitals did not admit black patients, forcing entrepreneurs to establish separate medical centers for people of color.
