Resource Center celebrates the life and advocacy of Ann Brown, who died Wednesday at the Center’s Oak Lawn Place. Reflecting on the significance of that space, Brown once said, “How many people get to be part of a miracle? Oak Lawn Place is the answer to many prayers.”
Brown was one of the original board members of what was known as the Dallas Gay Alliance (DGA) in 1983, when the organization founded what is now known as Resource Center. She served on the DGA board for four years.

Brown became involved in the LGBTQIA movement in the 1970s and played significant roles in many local organizations. She was friends with other early leaders including Bill Nelson, Terry Tebedo, John Thomas, Don Baker and others. In an early letter to members of the Dallas Gay Alliance and the broader community, Brown addressed concerns about broader participation of people of color in LGBTQIA issues and raising HIV/AIDS awareness.

Brown was an organizer of the Dallas contingent of the 1979 March on Washington for Gay and Le***an Rights, a member of the Dallas steering committee for the 1989 March on Washington, and part of the 1994 National Gay and Le***an Task Force’s Creating Change conference, held in Dallas.

She was a volunteer on Nelson’s unsuccessful 1986 run for Dallas City Council. In 1994, Brown was among a group of recipients of the Extra Mile Award, formed to recognize the significant contributions of le***ans to the Dallas community. Brown also served a year as a co-host on KNON’s Lambda Weekly radio program. She was featured in the KERA documentary Finding Our Voice: The Dallas Gay and Le***an Community, along with other founding members of the North Texas gay and le***an movement.

After briefly moving away to care for her mother, who had cancer, Brown returned to Dallas and became a member of the first board of directors for The Dallas Way, formed to preserve and document the history of LGBTQIA Dallas. In a 2013 presentation for The Dallas Way’s Outrageous Oral, Volume Six, Brown looked back on her years of advocacy, summing it up by saying, “I hope I made a difference for my community, because there were so many times I was the only woman there or the only person of color there… we wanted to make it a safer world, and I hope we did.”
