Thumb arthritis often referred to as basal joint arthritis or CMC (carpometacarpal) arthritis, is a common condition where the cartilage in the thumb joint wears down, causing pain and reduced movement. It typically affects the base of the thumb, where it meets the wrist.Common Symptoms • Pain at the base of the thumb, especially with pinching or gripping • Swelling or tenderness around the joint • Reduced strength and range of motion • A bump or enlarged joint at the base of the thumb • Clicking or grinding sounds during movementCauses • Aging (most common in people over 40) • Genetics • Prior injury or trauma to the thumb • Overuse or repetitive stress • More common in womenTreatment OptionsNon-Surgical: • Splints or braces to support the joint • Anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs like ibuprofen) • Topical creams (e.g., diclofenac gel) • Corticosteroid injections • Heat/cold therapy • Physical therapy or occupational therapySurgical:If conservative treatments don’t help, surgery may be considered.
