Resume rules are confusing.

Google says one thing. ChatGPT says another.
And all your coworker says is, "Sure, looks great!"
Suddenly you’ve got a 3-page resume with 27 skills and a Canva template that won’t even open.

Let’s clear up the confusion, please.

I’m Kristi and I'm back with Part 2 of “Resume Questions I Always Get Asked.”
These are the ones I see in my DMs, consults, and client convos every week.

👉 Should I list every job I’ve ever had?
👉 Can I use a creative resume template?
👉 Does my LinkedIn need to match my resume exactly?
👉 Should I list all my skills?

Swipe through the slides and if you're still unsure, reach out or consider investing in a resume audit from W.W.I.N.
Because your resume should make sense.
And you deserve to feel confident every time you apply.

In my last post, I shared how the job search landscape has changed over the past few years and what actions really moved the needle for the executive jobseekers in my network.

I closed with the fact that people gaining the most traction in their search are doubling down on having “conversations.”

In today’s post, I break down examples of how, when, and where you could be having those conversations.

And sure, you can figure out on your own what works and what doesn’t in today’s job market – but is that REALLY where you want to be spending your time?

Or would your time be better spent gaining clarity on how you want your next move to look?
Or warming up relationships in your current network?

If you’re ready to give the heavy lifting over to a professional career coach and résumé writer like me, book a consult and we can build a plan, together.

I once worked with an executive who never had to apply for a job before.

Sounds crazy, right?

Believe it or not, back in the day many professionals stayed with their organization for at least a decade. Sometimes their entire career.

So it makes sense if someone was hired right out of college and enjoyed where they were, they might stay for 20+ years…never needing a résumé.

Are you one of these leaders?

If so, I’m speaking to you.

The landscape has changed. Here’s what you need to know:

🔹Resumes remain important, but they aren’t the ONLY tool to land your next role.

🔹Optimized LinkedIn profiles are EQUALLY important as your résumé.

🔹Targeting and tailoring your résumé makes a huge difference.

🔹Networking trumps both the résumé and LinkedIn in today's oversaturated market.

The people I see gaining the most traction in their search are spending time having conversations with their current network AND expanding their network.

If you’ve been in the same role or company for decades, this process can feel overwhelming.

But with the right résumé, LinkedIn, and networking strategy, you’ll be ready.

👋 Reach out if you’re ready for support. I’d love to help you reduce your search time and land what’s next.

“I’m not a thought leader.”
That's what I heard from a recent client of mine.

She then proceeded to tell me about:
🔹 Speaking at industry events
🔹Publishing articles in respected journals
🔹Representing her organization in expert groups

So I asked her for her definition of a thought leader.
She nailed it.

My response back: “You just described what you’ve already been doing.”

Her eyes widened.
Lightbulb moment.

We updated her LinkedIn and career docs to reflect that specific expertise.

Soon after, she had three competing job offers — all from companies eager to bring her on board.

Here’s the lesson: if you are a thought leader and don’t show it, you’re likely selling yourself short.

And if you’re not yet there, intentionally building thought leadership can speed up your career climb.

Don’t wait until you’re job searching to elevate your brand or demonstrate your expertise.

The best time to start showing leadership in your ideas is NOW.

Need help doing that? Reach out, I'm here.

The job market is messy right now. Real messy.

My advice: Stop trying to make sense of it right now.

Instead, get strategic. Be intentional with your actions and activities that are IN your control.

Here are 4 MUST-DO's as you embark on your next career move:

🔹Get clear on your future role.
Think beyond the title. What responsibilities, culture, and impact do you want?

🔹Get curious about companies.
Which organizations align with your vision? Learn about their priorities and hiring outlook.

🔹Have conversations.
Talk to people in roles you want or at companies you admire. Ask questions, listen, and learn.

🔹Tailor your approach.
Use what you learn to position yourself strategically with your resume, messaging, and outreach.

Clarity, curiosity, and strategy will carry you farther than just applying everywhere. I promise.

It’s estimated that a job search in 2025 could easily cost you $20K+ 🤦🏻‍♀️

Take a look:

💥 The average search takes 5–7 months.

Let’s be conservative and go with 5 months.

💥 At a $75,000 salary, you earn about $300/day in a normal full-time role.

Five months = about 105 workdays.

105 workdays × $300/day = $31,500 in lost income.

That doesn’t even include lost benefits, retirement contributions, or stalled career growth.

👉 Every month unemployed = $6,300 lost (based on scenario above)

Now, think about this—if working with a professional resume writer shortens your search by just one month, you could earn back that $6,300.

And beyond the numbers?
My clients tell me how they feel more confident in both networking and interviewing situations with fresh career docs that speak to their experience, contributions, and value.

Confidence is priceless.

So, is it really “saving money” to do it yourself?
Or is it costing you more in the long run?

If you’re ready to invest in your future, let’s talk.
If not, I’ll still cheer you on. 👏

Who would've thought my puppy would teach me a lesson about job searching?

The other day I was doing laundry and Captain was at my feet, trying to “help me.”

My first thought?
"Ugh, I can’t get anything done with this dog around!"

Then it hit me: he doesn't intend on being a nuisance, he genuinely wants to help.
Seeing him as sweet and eager rather than annoying was a 💡 moment for me.

Job searching can feel exactly like that laundry pile.
Messy. Slow. Frustrating as heck.
You’re updating your resume, sending applications, networking…
and some days, it feels like you’ve gotten nowhere.
Or you notice yourself making excuses or blaming something else for getting in your way.

Sometimes all it takes is a pause and a little perspective shift.
Instead of thinking, I’m stuck, try reframing it: every small step I take is moving me closer to my desired outcome -- even if it doesn’t look like it right now.

If you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, don’t do it alone.

I’m here to guide you, keep you focused, and actually help you get to the next role.

“I’m done climbing the ladder — but I’m not done with my career.”
I talk to a lot of senior leaders that express the same sentiments.

The problem is, they have no idea what that next step looks like.

Some think, "Well, I'll just take some time off then and see what materializes."
And while stepping back CAN bring clarity...
It only works if there’s a plan in place.

What else helps?

➡ Direction
➡ Honest feedback
➡ A neutral sounding board
➡ A message that clearly reflects where you’re headed — not just where you’ve been

That’s where I come in.

We’ll talk through what’s next, what’s realistic, and what aligns with your strengths (and values — because that matters too).

I also have a tool called the Career Compass.
It gives you data-backed insight into which roles are a fit and which ones might just look good on paper.

Curious about this cool tool my clients are raving about? DM me. I’ll walk you through it.

I hate doing taxes.

I’m not a numbers girl.
I don’t need to understand accounting principles.
I don’t want to triple-check my math.
So I hired an accountant.

Could I do it myself? Sure.
Would it be stressful and probably full of mistakes? Also yes.

Same goes for your resume.

You can write it on your own.
You could also ask AI to do it.

But will it actually reflect the value only YOU can bring?
Will it position you for the right roles?
Will it help you stand out in a crowded job market?

Maybe. If you know what you're doing. If not, it could be a big fail. ❌❌❌

PRO TIP: Just because you can do something doesn’t mean it’s the best move.

Your resume is a high-stakes document.

If it’s not strong, strategic, and clear -- you won't get the interview.

So if writing it feels frustrating or overwhelming...
That’s not a failure. That’s a sign. You might not be the best person for the job.

If you’re ready for a resume that actually works for you, let's talk. Booking link in the comments.

I stopped setting goals this year and my results show it.

It wasn't the plan...
Life just got busy.
I figured I’d make it happen as soon as I had "time."

Spoiler: I didn’t. Oof.

Without clear goals, I wasn’t making progress.

Guess what? Same thing happens in your career.

If you don’t know 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 what you’re working toward...
If you’re open to “a few different directions” but not locked in on one...

You may actually not get ANYWHERE.

If you struggle with goal-setting, take it one step at a time.
What’s one small, specific goal you could commit to this week?
