This book is confronting.
This book is nebulous.
This book is insightful.
This book is layered.
This book is plain.
This book is an invitation.
This book is a secret.
This book is beautiful.
This book is confusing.

Turns out, this book may just be a mirror to the human condition. It may be that Odier has captured some of the twists and turns of our insides and posed them as questions that make us look deeper and consider more carefully than we had before.

That’s something, but as you read, looking deeper, and considering more carefully, something even more curious happens… you begin to feel, and to resonate with that feeling at a level deeper than thought or emotion, at a body level.

The doorway to joy might just lie in that turn away from the endless rationality and “doing” and to the ever present never ending “being”.

Or not.

Dr. Usui wanted to find and understand the higher stage of consciousness that we are all able to achieve.

Therefore, at the advice of his teacher and fellow monks he went on a spiritual quest on Mount Kurama, a place of significant spiritual past, for the Japanese people.

His purpose was to achieve ”Satori” – which translates as “enlightenment”. Usui was aware that such a quest is not going to be easy, so he started a long ritual of fasting, meditation, and prayer.

After a long and tiring 21 days, he fell into a deep meditative state. It was then when he received a strong beam of bright, white light, shining directly on his head. He also had a vision of the Reiki symbols and how to channel the light through them.

He started having a sudden feeling of awakening and excitement and went down the mountain. He was eager to share his experience with his teacher and fellow priests.

The story goes that while ascending from the mountain, he stubbed his toe on a rock and fell. He placed his hand over his toe and the healing energy began flowing from his hands.

The pain went away and he was healed.

Usui was amazed by this and he realized that apart from the strong “enlightenment” feeling, he gained the ability to heal.

That is when he had an epiphany: his life purpose was achieved; he now had to heal others and teach them what he has learned.

I am so grateful to be alive in a time where women and other traditionally marginalized people are beginning to really be able to stand up and have a voice.

Once I started reading books by people with different backgrounds and experiences than the typical male voices that have dominated the histories and literature for hundreds of years… I began to realize how frankly BORING the traditional male view is.

The language of the heart was almost forgotten in the quest to dominate and subjugate the universe by man.

Thank you goddess, women, and all those who have not been able to speak their truth for keeping the fire of love, compassion, wisdom, and true strength burning in the waters of your souls.

So grateful for these two women, sharing their journey through Reiki and discovering so much about its history and the absolute critical role of the women who helped keep it alive until today. And most of all thank you for stepping away from the analytical, “factual” mode of writing that has been such the tradition of our histories, and instead taking the leap to write about the story of their lives, families, and relationships as equally important to their specific contributions to Reiki.

The Reiki symbols are something that are typically shrouded in mystery.

For most of modern Reiki's history - ~1930-1990 - the symbols were very clearly not allowed to be written down for any reason other than during a Reiki II/III training session. Typically during these sessions, they would practice writing the symbols and then burn the paper at the end of the training.

This was for several very good reasons - the most important of which was to help the student step into their knowing - the symbols, once learned and transferred into the students energy field by the Reiju/initiation/attunement process, are there permanently, accessible at any time.

Another important reason for the secrecy was to preserve the potency of the methods by keeping them undiluted by outside practices or commentary. This was VERY necessary during the time of the birth of modern Reiki, since there were wars going on all around the world and the patriarchal and puritanical systems of 1900-prior were still very opposed to the spreading of energetic practices.

In the 1990s, several authors released the Reiki symbols in print for the first time on a large, accessible scale.

Diane Stein's book, Essential Reiki, is one of the most comprehensive texts from this time, and her reasons for sharing most of the previously secret information resonate strongly.

She speaks at length about the times we are living in and that, while the secrecy was needed in the past to preserve the teachings until the present, now the situation on Earth is more dire, and we need Reiki for every, as accessibly as possible.

I both honor and study the more traditional ways of sharing the Reiki trainings and knowledge, and agree that, now is the time for everyone to experience this element of being human, this capacity to heal and be healed.

We begin with a discussion to shape your clear intention, which will guide the energy throughout the session to where and how it is needed most. Then you will lie back on the table as I take you into a meditation to achieve a relaxed and open energetic state as we dive into the treatment.

After the meditation I will have you start the breathwork, queuing you to the different breathing patterns and counting breaths and time as needed.

I will proceed to move around the table, placing my hands at various positions on or above your body (depending on your preference) and channel the Reiki energy into you.

When the treatment part of the session is complete, I will have you slowly come back to your physical body and open your eyes. We will then share what we each experienced and observed throughout the session and attempt to jump start the integration process.

The practice of Reiki self-healing has brought so much to my experience of life. 🔮

It has given me so many precious things, or rather, helped heal my ability to perceive the precious things that were already there.

In May, & I had the immense honor and privilege to workshop alongside & for a Reiki + somatic body work + yoga workshop at It was such a beautiful experience to sink into ourselves and in that deepened presence, GIVE ourselves the healing that we needed, and to be able to receive it.

Reiki self healing is a practice that is available to everyone, all the time. You don’t need to go through training to show up for yourself and connect with this universal life force (although training and the attunements in particular are necessary for healing others with Reiki and are helpful in deepening your practice).

Take a few moments whenever you need it - it can be 30 seconds or 30 minutes:

- Take 5 deep breaths - in through your nose, sigh out the mouth
- Think of something your grateful for
- FEEL where that gratitude is in your body
- Nurture that feeling as you feel it move into your heart center and build there
- let your hands become light and begin to float
- let your hands drift to any point on your body that needs love, feel your hands move like they are attracted to a magnet
- release that grateful, loving warmth from your heart center, feeling it flow out through your palms and fingertips to that place on your body
- stay there as long as you need or move to other places on your body if you feel your hands pulled there
- when you’re ready, place your hands in your lap or at prayer at your heart, take a deep breath in and thank yourself for showing up for you today.

There is so much more to explore about Reiki!

Commonly the high level history of Reiki that one hears about is dominated by men, with the exception of Hawayo Takata and the amazing service she did for humanity by brining Reiki to the West via Hawaii.

The truth is that, like all other healing and wisdom traditions, Reiki would probably not have survived or thrived in the way that it has, were it not for Dr. Hayashi's wife and all the other women masters and practitioners who have carried the tradition forward.

So much more to come exploring the role that different groups and people's have played in the ancient roots & modern history of Reiki!
