We hope that you are enjoying our Back to School Tips this month! Come back next week for a few more.....

This week our goal is to help you with the dreaded question "What did you do today?"

Today's tip is to create and use a Remember Page.

Just like the Dry Erase Board -- many of kids need a visual to help them talk about their day.

We have made a ton of different Remember pages for our kids.....some focus just on their favorite parts of the day; some have tons of visuals on them; some have scripts for them to use; and more. All of the pages we have made have been different because our kids are different.

The goal is to create a page that visually represents part of their day/entire day as well as has language that they can use to talk about their day.

If you are a KidSpeak client talk to your therapist about making a remember page for your child.

If you are not a KidSpeak client and need help making and/or using a remember page -- DM us -- we are here to help. We have helped families - teachers - speech therapists - and more create remember pages for their kids/students in the past.

Happy Thursday! Today's Back to School - Let's Talk about our Day Tip is Talk about Your Day.

Some of our friends will completely shut down when you ask "What did you do today?"

If this is your child -- then the best thing you can do is talk about your day.

Talk about your day in the same way you want them to talk about their day. Such as:

1) If they are working out listing out what they did for the day -- then you list out the things you did.

2) If they are working on talking about friends -- then you talk about your day in relation to your friends/family. Like who you had lunch with - did you talk on the phone with anyone today - etc.

3) If they are working on talking about their favorites -- then you talk about the favorite things you did that day.

4) If they are working on talking about their feelings -- then you talk about your day and your feelings.

5) and more.

Really you can't do wrong here -- just talk about your day!

Today's Back to School Let's Talk About Our Day Tip is....... Create a Remember Song!

We LOVE music at our office... as in our experience music can often be magical.
If your child loves music then this may be the tip for you.

We suggest picking out a song that you and/or your child loves that has a fun tune. Then start by changing up the words to focus on your child's school day.

Once you do this start your week by singing and filling in about their day that you know. The more you do this pause and let your child fill in the black about their day.
Can you guess the real name of the start of this remember song........"Stop! In the name of school. What did you do today. Think about it!"

This week we are sharing "Let's Talk About our Day" Tips.

For some kids no matter how hard you try -- talking about their day in the car is just too hard and that is okay. In addition, some kids just have days /weeks when it is hard -- again that is okay.

For these kids or for these days/weeks we suggest to just emotionally regulate by using your Car Quiet Bag.

This bag should be packed with activities that.....
1) your child likes
2) your child can do on their own
3) is quiet
4) is calming
5) is car approved

The only goal is to help regulate your child. Then later in the afternoon/evening you can try the other tips!

If you need help creating your own Quiet Bag and/or you try this tip and need help -- reach out -- we are here to help!

Happy Monday! We hope that you are enjoying our Back to School Tips this month!

So far we have discussed Tips for Transitioning back to School (new or old) and Tips for Homework. This week we want to focus on How to Help Your Kids Talk About their School Day.

Most of our kids really dislike the question "What did you do today?" However most of our families are super excited to hear about our kids days -- so this week take a look at these tips.

Our first tip is to Keep a Dry Erase Board and Marker in the car for your child.
Some kids do best when they can visually see what they did that day....so we work on drawing it out such as:

1) draw something you did at recess
2) draw something you ate at snack/lunch
3) draw how you are feeling
4) draw something you read today
5) and more

Remember some friends do best when you start silly -- so think of what they love and add it in -- let's say they love dinosaurs you could start with -- draw a dinosaur sliding down the slide - draw a dinosaur in PE class -- and more.
If your kids like this -- then the more you practice the more they will start talking about their day.

One thing that can be fun is as soon as they get in the car already have a picture of something you did that day -- and have them look and guess something you did.
If you try this tip and need help -- reach out -- we are here to help!

📚 What’s Ms. Manda Reading This Weekend? 📚

Happy Sunday! This weekend, Ms. Manda is re-reading a longtime favorite: Students with Asperger Syndrome: A Guide for College Personnel. 💜

We discovered this book about 7 years ago through a recommendation from , and it quickly became one of our go-to resources for families preparing for the transition to college (another favorite from this series coming soon!).

What makes this book so special? It walks families through all the essential areas to consider—from how college support services differ from high school, to the many life skills involved in living away from home. It's realistic, thoughtful, and incredibly helpful.

We often recommend that parents start reading this book as early as Middle School. We know that sounds early—but it gives families a clear vision of what lies ahead and how to support their child in building the skills they’ll need.

💚 This book is a must-read for parents, teachers, and therapists supporting students with Autism, language challenges, ADHD, learning differences, and more.

If you have a middle or high schooler and you're starting to think about the future—this one’s for you!

Happy Friday! We hope that you all have enjoyed our Back to School Help with Homework Tips this week. Come back next week to learn about how to help your child talk about their school day!

Our last tip is if Homework is a struggle for your child -- then reach out for Help and get a Homework Helper.

One thing we see is when Homework is a struggle for our kids paired with when our parents are unsuccessful with helping them --- then this struggle blends into their relationship outside of homework.

Our goal is to keep our Parent - Child relationship healthy.

So if this sounds like your homework time -- then a Homework Helper may be the best choice for you. This may be a tutor, a teacher, a past teacher, a college student, and more.

At our office we offer a Homework Helper Program that utilizes Speech and Language Pathologists and Speech and Language Pathologists Assistants -- if you are interested in starting this at our office or need help training a college student or just need help in general -- please DM us; text us 214-636-0871 or email us amanda@kidspeakdallas.com. We are here to help.

Today our Tip is to be prepared for it to be "HARD".

Homework can be "HARD" in a few ways:

1) Work: The actual work may be hard.

2) Executive Functioning Skills: EF skills may be hard like attention, task initiation time management, planning, organizing and more.

3) Emotional Regulation: Some kids may struggle with emotionally regulating themselves after school.

**It is very important to note that some friends may struggle in one of these areas -- but others may struggle within two or even all**

Remember half the battle with homework is Being Prepared! So your goal is to be prepared for things to be hard by creating routines to help your child such as: asking for help; being okay with making mistakes; taking breaks; you helping them (set up, clean up, create a list, do the work); already having their work area set up; have a snack set out ready to go; and more.

Also remember that most of the time when it is HARD -- our kids become "down on themselves" so when this happens try to focus on "It is okay that it is hard -- it is suppose to be hard because you are learning -- I will help you" and then help them by leading them to the answer.

If you need help with Homework please DM - email amanda@kidspeakdallas.com - text us 214-636-0871 -- as there are many ways we can help you.

Happy Wednesday! Today's Back to School Tip - Help with Homework is to Schedule in Breaks!

One of the best things you can do for Homework Time is to schedule in Break Times.

Most of our kids do best when they start Homework as soon as they get home. So we suggest having a snack break first -- having this ready at their homework space for when they come home is a great idea. Some kids needs crunchy foods - some need sweet foods - some need a combination.

Next the best thing is to think about your child and know what helps them.....such as:
💚1 homework task - 1 break task (keep repeating)
💚2 homework tasks - 1 break task (keep repeating)
💚placing a break in the middle
💚placing a break at the end
💚doing a combination of the above
💚allowing them to initiate breaks when needed

As always using these tips to create a Homework Routine is going to set your child up to succeed!

Our second Back to School Tip for "Help with Homework" is to......Know How it Works!

The first battle with Homework is really to Know How it Works!

Here are a few questions to ask/think about:

1) When is Homework Scheduled?? Is it given out on Monday and due Friday?? Is it given out every day and due the next day??

2) How is Homework Scheduled?? Is it written on the board and your kids have to write it down? Are your kids given a Homework page? Can you find it online?

3) How is Homework Kept?? Is there one homework folder for all classes? Is there a homework folder for each class? Is your child supposed to keep up with their own homework?

4) How is Homework Turned In?? Is there a place in the classroom(s) to turn in their work? If so are they given a reminder? Are they asked to turn in their work?

5) What happens if/when they forget to turn homework in?? Can they turn in late work?

Most of the time it takes about a 1-2 weeks (the first 1 -2 weeks of school) to get a full picture of Homework.

Once we know these answers -- then you will be able to help your kids more with these procedures such as: you helping them, advocating for what they need hep with at school, and more.

Remember half the battle with homework is Knowing and Being Prepared!

If you need help with Homework please DM - email amanda@kidspeakdallas.com - text us 214-636-0871 -- as there are many ways we can help you.

Happy Tuesday! It’s time for another “Tipful Tuesday”!!
Today’s tip is to use a Backpack Checklist!
💜If your child struggles with remembering everything then using a backpack checklist is a great tool.
💚Many of our families clip this on their backpack or put it in the area where they store their backpacks at home.
💜Remember when starting to use this support you will have to do it with your child. The more you do it with them the better.....this is helping them learn a variety of ex*****on function skills. Soon you will be able to slowly back off and they will be able to do this with minimal to no help.
💚All kids are different....some kids will be using this on their own after a few days while others may take weeks. Also when there is a break from school (day off, weekend, fall break, etc) some kids will come back and use the list just fine without our while others may need more of your help. All of that is okay.
💜If you have questions about Backpack Checklist or need help making one please DM us!
