๐๐Did you know that even your tiny brand new baby has regulating abilities?๐๐
It is true that Baby is quite dependent for her needs, but all mammals are attracted to homeostasis. Maintaining internal stability includes sleeping. So holding to this basic concept (We are not discussing emotional or impulsive attention self-regulation here.), the newly born baby will sleep when tired. The conditions surrounding Baby can influence whether she gets quality, healthy sleep or not.
Now, there is a lot to this topic. Just now, we are thinking only of that sweet, sleepy newly born baby. For simplicity, think of the baby who is just 3-14 days old.
First, Baby requires a safe sleep environment. (Again, just thinking about independent sleeping just now - like when you are grabbing a nice shower or a simple moment of your own space.) Baby also needs to be adequately warm & to have a reasonably calm environment. โ Given these things a healthy, full term, no-birth injuries/trauma -baby will sleep when she needs to.
When we capitalize on this time, we can gently teach Baby to sleep without a litany of interventions. Baby does NOT REQUIRE black out curtains, a sound machine, & a professionally secure swaddle. It may very well be optimal to create a reasonably calm, somewhat to mostly quiet (but not silent) atmosphere, safe sleep space, & the OPPORTUNITY to close her eyes on her own once placed onto the safe sleeping surface.
That moment when Baby is placed on the sleeping surface with a very normal but calm energy of her care giver allows her to
๐ build trust in her care giver
๐ trust her bodyโs healthy need for sleep
๐ realize she can relax, settle-in on her own.
