I am a Developmental Specialist (BS/MS) who is also a NCS, Breastfeeding Peer Counselor & Doula. I focus exclusively on consults that support (1) Babyโ€™s healthiest first days & (2) development through all phases of infancy & into (3)early childhood, (4) your postpartum recovery, & (5) successful breastfeeding/pumping that align with your goals in this this area. (6)When Baby is rising to meet challenges, I support her progress through hands-on, play-based supports tailored to her needs that mitigate or prevent delays in development.

๐Ÿ๐Ÿ MUST you swaddle?๐Ÿ๐Ÿ
&
๐Ÿ๐Ÿ When is the appropriate time to stop swaddling?๐Ÿ๐Ÿ

Swaddling is most helpful to Baby in the first DAYS of life.

Swaddling is NOT a requirement.

Most babies do not need to be swaddled past the first 8-14 days of life.

Every baby needs opportunities to sleep unswaddled.

Babies should never be swaddled once they are rolling over.

[The AAP does NOT recommend rolling Baby back over to her back during sleep once she Is rolling over on her own.]

Suck Swallow Breathe Synchrony ๐Ÿ

Babies begin to suck, swallow, & โ€œbreatheโ€ while in womb.

You & I do these acts also.

We all organize our bodies and even settle our minds from our mouth. Babies suck - on a breast, bottle, or pacifier while adults swallow, chew gum, or bite on a pencil.

Muse with me about pacifiers. Babies suck on them and swallow and breathe while using them. ๐Ÿค” Hmmโ€ฆ in a world gripped with fear of SIDS, might a pacifier be wise?

(The AAP recommends the use of a pacifier.)
(I recommend Mam because orthodontia matters.)

Discover the MAM Pacifier range and find the perfect pacifier for your baby. Available for babies of all ages. With Silk Teat or Natural Latex.

๐Ÿ๐ŸDid you know that even your tiny brand new baby has regulating abilities?๐Ÿ๐Ÿ

It is true that Baby is quite dependent for her needs, but all mammals are attracted to homeostasis. Maintaining internal stability includes sleeping. So holding to this basic concept (We are not discussing emotional or impulsive attention self-regulation here.), the newly born baby will sleep when tired. The conditions surrounding Baby can influence whether she gets quality, healthy sleep or not.

Now, there is a lot to this topic. Just now, we are thinking only of that sweet, sleepy newly born baby. For simplicity, think of the baby who is just 3-14 days old.

First, Baby requires a safe sleep environment. (Again, just thinking about independent sleeping just now - like when you are grabbing a nice shower or a simple moment of your own space.) Baby also needs to be adequately warm & to have a reasonably calm environment. โ€” Given these things a healthy, full term, no-birth injuries/trauma -baby will sleep when she needs to.

When we capitalize on this time, we can gently teach Baby to sleep without a litany of interventions. Baby does NOT REQUIRE black out curtains, a sound machine, & a professionally secure swaddle. It may very well be optimal to create a reasonably calm, somewhat to mostly quiet (but not silent) atmosphere, safe sleep space, & the OPPORTUNITY to close her eyes on her own once placed onto the safe sleeping surface.

That moment when Baby is placed on the sleeping surface with a very normal but calm energy of her care giver allows her to
๐Ÿ build trust in her care giver
๐Ÿ trust her bodyโ€™s healthy need for sleep
๐Ÿ realize she can relax, settle-in on her own.
