Outdoorsman and YouTuber Tony Engelke recently suffered a stroke and came to Encompass Health, for inpatient rehabilitation. Before his stroke, Tony spent his free time in the wilderness documenting his many adventures from the trails on his YouTube channel. "In a split second, everything changed," Tony said. Tony had a stroke and lost mobility on the right side of his body and struggled to speak. With the determination to get back to hiking and continue his videos, Tony used his YouTube channel to raise stroke awareness and document his daily life during rehabilitation.
We are proud to report that Tony rang the bell at Encompass Health signaling his discharge to return home. While Tony isn't quite ready to return to rugged overnight hiking adventures, he plans to embark on shorter adventures near his home and encourages others to do the same. "Everybody should do a random adventure," he said. "We could all use that moment of gratitude to appreciate what we're capable of. It's important to do the little things that sometimes we take for granted." Happy trails, Tony!

Often through this process we see something magical happen. Patients find they have a second family here. And from that, meaningful relationships emerge.
