Encompass Health Columbia recently had the pleasure of caring for Samuel “Sammy” Bird. Sammy is a retired state trooper, having served for 27 years. After a motorcycle crash, Sammy’s injuries resulted in the loss of his left leg below the knee and a significant wound above the amputation site. Encompass Health Columbia was able to offer Sammy the intensive rehabilitation and wound care needed to prepare him to go home safely. From the moment he arrived, Sammy showed a brightness and motivation sure to make him a success story.

“Everyone was so knowledgeable," he said. "No one was shooting from the hip about what they did. They knew what they were doing and made it fun. I learned so much from the therapy group. They helped me understand how to walk with my walker so that it made it much easier for me and my wife.”

After 10 days, Sammy made enough progress to finally make it home! Thank you, Sammy, for allowing Encompass Health Columbia to walk you through this step of your recovery!

At age 49, James Gunn had a major stroke that left him unable to use the left side of his body. When James arrived at Encompass Health, he was unable to walk or use his left arm. While here, he participated in at least three hours of therapy a day, five days a week. After about two weeks of therapy he was able to walk with a cane and regained strength and movement in his left arm.

"God has put some amazing people in my path while I have been here. When I got here I couldn’t walk or move my hand," he said. James walked out of our hospital ready to return to work as a nurse. Thank you, James, for choosing Encompass Health.

At age 43, Brandon Kuhlengel became severely ill after contracting COVID-19 and pneumonia. Respiratory failure required him to be on a ventilator. He was in the acute care hospital for 17 days. When he transferred to Encompass Health, he was weak and unable to walk or care for himself. While there, he where he participated in at least three hours of therapy a day, five days a week and was able to regain his strength quickly. He was able to return home to his family just one week after his admission. Brandon worked with physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapists.

Although our rehabilitation hospital was an hour from his home, it was worth the distance. Brandon couldn’t say enough good things about our hospital and how much we helped him get better. He was excited to be going home to his family. He is pictured with nurses and speech therapy team celebrating all of his hard work and accomplishments as we were sending him out with best wishes.

Last year, David Lee suffered a seizure, and his wife immediately called 911. On the way to the hospital, he had another seizure and ended up being in a coma for two and a half months.

During that time, David was diagnosed with COVID-19 and while battling the virus, he lost 170 pounds. Once he was stabilized, he was sent to a rehabilitation facility where he spent 21 days. When he returned home, he unfortunately had to return to the acute care hospital. After his second stay at the hospital, he was told he could return home once again, but his wife was concerned about his level of function.

Thankfully one of his therapists felt he could benefit from further acute rehabilitation. This time, that therapist contacted one of our rehabilitation liaisons at Encompass Health Miami, and we were able to bring him to our hospital for intensive therapy and medical follow up.

When he arrived, he was totally dependent for all activities of daily living. But David was so motivated to get better, and he can now transfer with supervision, walk with moderate assistance with a rolling walker and perform bathing and dressing without assistance using adaptive equipment. His improvements enabled him to return home with his wife. Congratulations, David!
