(I composed this post all by myself - but feel free to share it far and wide - until we stop hurting our children, we will not see a reduction in serious criminal behavior or substance abuse).
Please read this information very carefully - we have mistakenly taught our children about "Stranger Danger," and now it's known that 93% of all child victims of s*xual abuse know their offender - most often, the s*xual abuser is someone in their family or a "trusted member of the community," such as a teacher, pastor/priest, coach, or child care provider.
Educating our children is important* but educating adults is the most effective way to prevent child s*xual abuse.
SEE BELOW - THE STATE OF TEXAS REQUIRES STUDENTS TO BE EDUCATED ABOUT RECOGNIZING AND REPORTING ABUSE - BUT IT ALSO REQUIRES THAT SCHOOLS OBTAIN PARENT PERMISSION TO DO SO. Think about it - if you are or someone you know is abusing your child, are you going to give your consent for your child(ren) to learn what abuse is and how to ask for help?
This is not an antequated law - literally passed in the past 1-2 years.
*Senate Bill 9 (SB 9) of the 87th Texas Legislative Session requires school districts to offer curriculum to students in the prevention of child abuse (elementary & secondary), family violence (elementary & secondary), dating violence (secondary), and s*x trafficking (secondary). Parents/caregivers must provide consent before their child can receive instruction in the specified topics. Without opt-in consent, students will be unable to participate in the lesson(s).
