⭐️Excited to share insights from my research project during my Pediatric Fellowship at Texas Children’s hospital Baylor College of Medicine. In palliative medicine, our focus is on providing patients with the necessary information and support to make informed decisions about their care. Language plays a crucial role in how we communicate and approach caregiving.

⭐️Inspired by Dr. Gitanjli Arora's essay "A Lovely Family," our project delves into the significance of labeling families as "lovely" or "difficult." Do these terms relate to factors like discipline, race, or insurance status? Aren't all families equally dedicated to advocating for their child’s well-being? We explore these questions to understand the impact of biased language in healthcare.

⭐️Curious to learn more about our findings? Dive into our publication, "The Use of Biased Language in the Care of Seriously Ill Children: A Pilot Study," Kudos to all of my mentors and our amazing research team for their support, guidance and mutual and sincere curiousity in exploring this topic!: Kim, Price, Banerjee, Franklin, MSN, RN, NEA-BC Franklin, Israel Castañeda Almendárez, Jump, Rubenstein, and Ann Jarrell.

💜Often when I share that part of my work involves providing Neonatal and Perinatal Palliative Care as well as Perinatal Hospice, the first response I receive is gosh that's so sad or that sounds so hard.

💙 I usually pause before I respond to acknowledge the gravity of the work and the often-silent pain our families carry. My friends and colleagues are right. This work is hard, and it can be incredibly sad. But it can also be incredibly healing. During this month and especially today we take a moment to honor all the babies gone to soon and the families that still speak their names.

💙This is often a silent pain that includes and many other causes of infant loss. Today we stop the silence. I honor all the health care professionals called to this work and the parent advocates who have taught us how to better serve them and continue to care for their families. Join the International Wave of Light at 7pm tonight and light a candle in honor of babies and families gone too soon.

🕯Feel free to join me on my page or share on your own social media channels with the hashtag . To those whose families have been forever changed by pregnancy and infant loss... I honor you today and light a candle tonight in your honor. I am honored to do so. You are not alone!

💙Shout out to the AAP for an amazing National Conference in Orlando. I had the honor of presenting as part of the Joint Program between Bioethics, Neonatology and Hospice and Palliative Medicine Section in which we discussed Caring for Birthing Families when External Factors limit Options.

💜It was wonderful to connect with so many leaders in the field all committed to a healthier and safer tomorrow for children and their families. I made so many new friends and reconnected with so many more! I was especially inspired by the number of parents presenting at this year’s conference, including in our panel with Ashley Waddell Tingstad Esquire, a Courageous Parents Advocate, who shared her family’s journey with navigating serious pediatric illness and how we as medical professionals can improve shared decision-making.

💙 I was additionally inspired by Dr. Elayna Fernandez of The PositiveMom.com, who shared how her pediatrician created a safe space for her to break the cycle of trauma for her family and the power of our words as pediatricians.

💜We laughed, we learned, we worked, we played ..we have the best jobs in the world and I am grateful!

💙October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. During this month we pause to honor those families who have been affected by the loss of a baby.

💙Did you know that 1 in 4 families are impacted by pregnancy loss?
In the U.S. 20,000 babies a year are impacted by stillbirth. 1 in 10 babies is impacted by complications related to prematurity. Many will die as a result of these complications.
All are gone too soon.

🕯October 15th is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day.

🕯On that day we pause to participate in the National Wave of Light Ceremony. At this time all across the world candles are lit in honor of babies who have gone too soon. For the past few years, I have hosted a Wave of Light Ceremony on my DrTerri MD Page.

💙Please feel free to join me at 7pm on my page for the Live Stream 10-15-24 in honor of babies gone too soon. If you or your family has been impacted by pregnancy or infant loss and would like to have your loved one honored, please feel free to leave your baby's name, date of birth, date of loss, and cause of loss if desired in the comment section.

💙I'm sending lots of love and light your way.

I am honored to be an invited guest for Congresswoman Robin Kelly's Health Disparities Panel at the 33rd Annual Legislative Conference in Partnership with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. Representative Kelly is a dedicated advocate for Maternal Health Equity. I look forward to a productive discussion on addressing systemic barriers to health equity and amplifying the voices of those most affected by health disparities. This year's session focuses on Gun Violence Prevention, Food as Medicine, and Digital Health Equity, and I will share insights on the impact and challenges of Digital Health in maternal, neonatal, and pediatric spaces.
