Nobody talks about how heavy it actually is.

There are days where I feel like I'm one more thing away from just completely losing it.

Not because anything dramatic happened.

Just because I have to be a mum, and a boss, and look put together, and keep up with my friends, and make time for my relationship, and also somehow have a body that I'm at peace with. I have to do all of that at the same time.

And the wellness industry's answer to that?

Do more.
Optimize more.
Add another habit.

Nobody's talking about the fact that being a woman right now is exhausting.

Not in a broken way.

In a 'I'm carrying a lot and I've been carrying it quietly for a really long time' way.

And sometimes the most radical thing you can do is just… take a minute for yourself.

The wellness industry spent a decade telling women to optimize harder.

Nobody talks about this version of drinking.
Not the party version. Not the "I have a problem" version.

The quiet version.
The 6pm version.
The I-just-need-my-brain-to-stop version.
The glass of wine that isn't even enjoyable anymore, it's just the only thing that works.

Except it doesn't really work. You know that. You wake up at 3am anyway, mind already running, body already tired, and now you've borrowed from tomorrow too.

I did this for years before I understood what was actually happening. My nervous system was so dysregulated that I had no other way to shift gears. The wine wasn't the problem. It was the only solution I had.

When I found something that actually supported my nervous system instead of just numbing it, the shift wasn't dramatic. I didn't white-knuckle anything. I just... stopped needing it as much.

One drink instead of three. Sometimes none. Not because I was trying. I just wasn't desperate anymore.

If you're awake right now, put your phone down after this.
Not because scrolling is bad. Because your nervous system is already overwhelmed and the light isn't helping.

First, try this before you reach for anything:
Place one hand on your chest. One on your stomach. Breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 4, out for 8. Do it three times. Slowly. The long exhale is what activates your parasympathetic nervous system — the part that tells your body it's safe to rest.

Still awake?

Try dropping the temperature. Stick your feet out from the covers. Your body temperature needs to fall slightly to initiate sleep and sometimes that's all it takes.

Still there?

Write down the one thing that's loudest in your head. Not a to-do list. Just the thing. Get it out of your body and onto a note in your phone. Your brain will stop trying to hold it.

I used to snap and then spend the rest of the day hating myself for it.

Not because I was angry. Because I was running on empty and “oh just… one more thing”.

One more question, one more request, one more person needing something from me. It pushed me past a line I didn't even know had moved.

That's what a dysregulated nervous system actually looks like. It's not a huge mental breakdown (although sometimes it can be). It doesn’t always feel like a crisis.
It's just a woman who has been in survival mode so long that she's lost her buffer. The patience she used to have. The version of herself she actually likes.

You're not failing.
You're not a bad mom.
You're carrying what three people should be carrying and wondering why you're struggling to hold it.

Spring is when I always notice it most.
The fog lifting, the light coming back, and this quiet voice saying: I just want to feel like myself again.
That's not a lot to ask. That's everything.
