SYNDROMIC CLEFT BABAIES

Clefts of the lip and/or palate (CL/P) are among the most common birth defects worldwide. The majority are non-syndromic where CL/P occurs in isolation of other phenotypes. Where one or more additional features are involved, clefts are referred to as syndromic.

TYPES OF CLEFT LIPS

Unilateral: on one side.
Bilateral: on both sides.
Complete: extends all the way into the nostril.
Incomplete: does not extend up into the nostril.
Isolated: cleft lip without a cleft palate.

CLEFT SPEECH ASSESSMENT
If a child has a cleft lip only, the child’s speech should be normal or close to normal. Children with a cleft palate are at risk for speech problems and are followed closely by a speech language pathologist, audiologist, and otolaryngologist (ENT specialist). Before the palate is repaired, the child may have delays in speech and language. This may be related to fluid in their middle ear space, which may cause temporary hearing loss. Often, ear tubes (tympanostomy tubes) are placed to help remove the fluid.

Most children do not start talking until about 1 year of age and most cleft palates are intentionally repaired around 12 to 15 months of age, before the child starts showing problems with speech.

Starting at 3 years, children with a cleft palate will get regular speech evaluations by the speech pathologists during your visit with the cleft and craniofacial team. This is done to ensure that your child does not have any speech concerns.

HOW TO FEED CLEFT BABY
Use a specialized cleft palate bottle as demonstrated by your baby's medical team. Place your baby in an upright, sitting position to prevent the formula from flowing back into the nose area. Keep the bottle tilted so the ni**le is always filled with milk and pointed down away from the cleft.
