Raising kids in 2025 isn’t anything like it used to be. Back in the 90s, a Happy Meal was $2.39. Now it’s closer to $6. Movie tickets were $4.50 in 1995. Today, taking a family of four to the movies can cost you $80 before snacks.

Groceries tell the same story. In 2000, a gallon of milk was $2.79. Eggs were 88 cents a dozen. Bread was a dollar. Now you walk into the store with $100 and walk out with three bags that barely last the week.

Rent is the biggest heartbreak. In 1990, the average apartment was $447 a month. In 2000, it was $602. Today, families are paying over $1,500 on average, sometimes double or triple that depending on where you live and that’s not even for a house with a yard, it’s for a tiny space you can barely stretch out in.

But the numbers are only half the story. The real pain comes from being a parent in this economy. Back then, our parents could swing pizza nights, family trips, and birthday parties without it draining their whole paycheck. Today, we’re choosing between bills and memories. We’re saying no to ice cream runs because gas went up again. We’re watching childhood slip by while trying to keep up with adult responsibilities that cost more than ever.

Our kids don’t see the numbers, but we do. And the guilt cuts deep when you want to give them everything but the world keeps making it harder.

Parenting has always been work. But parenting now means fighting a system that makes even the basics feel like luxuries. And some days, just keeping the lights on feels like the biggest win of all.

Pizza Bagels but with a twist 🍕🥯
Cheesy Buffalo Chicken Pizza Bagels! 🔥

✨ Slice a ROYO Bread Co. bagel in half and air fry until crisp (use code LARISSA10 to save).
✨ Mix together:

2 oz shredded chicken

2 Laughing Cow cheese wedges (any flavor)

1/4 cup shredded mozzarella

Buffalo wing sauce (to taste)

Ranch seasoning or 1 tbsp ranch dressing

✨ Add mixture to bagel slices, top with onion if you like.
✨ Air fry at 375°F until crisp + melty cheesy goodness.

My latest breakfast obsession. 200g Oikos triple zero strawberry yogurt, 100g strawberries, and a Built brownie batter puff bar. 285 calories and 37g protein. I also do another version with vanilla yogurt, pineapple, banana, and a coconut Built puff bar.

🥑 Bariatric-Friendly Avocado Chicken Salad 🥗
Fresh, creamy, and perfect for small portions + protein goals!

Ingredients:
🥑 1 small ripe avocado (mashed for creaminess)
🍗 4 oz cooked chicken breast, finely shredded (or canned chicken for convenience)
🥒 ½ cup diced cucumber (crunch + hydration)
🍅 ½ cup cherry tomatoes, halved
🌿 1 tbsp plain Greek yogurt (extra protein, keeps it light)
🧂 Pinch of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and squeeze of lemon juice

Instructions:
In a small bowl, mash the avocado and mix with Greek yogurt until smooth.
Fold in shredded chicken, cucumber, and cherry tomatoes.
