Girls Rock Dallas

This workshop was made for GRD by our friends at Be Project (The Family Place). Hi my name is Ally is a educational role-play between Be Project Educator Toya and new intern Ally. When Toya and Ally first met, Toya was sure that Ally’s name was pronounced like “Ally” (Al-eye) but she was corrected and told it was pronounced like Ali (short for Allyson). It was then that Ally became intrigued and wanted to know what an Ally was which Toya then proceeded to take Ally on a journey of what it means to be an Ally. Toya introduces Ally to the ally action continuum which then leads to the Be Project team role-playing for our audience what these different stages on the continuum could look like in real life. We encourage who will view this video to stop and reflect on the different stages on the continuum and ask yourself where do you fall? We then encourage you to start a dialogue with other individuals in your life about different groups who have been oppressed or abused and discuss ways to show them allyship.

"First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season."

Shallow understanding from people of goodwill is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection."

Addiction Neuroscience 101

Addiction is a tricky topic because it is a chronic preventable illness. But it’s more than just that. Here’s a video that explains what happens in the brain and why substance use disorder is a complicated disease that affects you biopsychosocially.

This is an overview of the neurobiology of addiction

Addiction is not just about not using.

“Addiction is not a choice anybody makes. It’s a response to emotional pain.” - Dr Gabor Mate

What it's like to be anxious || My little anxiety friend!

HEY ERRYBODY! This is Zandra, your friendly neighborhood counselor who likes to say “f**k”. I sometimes see that it’s hard to explain to anxiety to those who do not suffer from it chronically. PS, I say suffer in a non-shaming way because... well... IT IS miserable. The sh*t ain’t fun. Anxiety is like a painful hangnail. It’s just there out of nowhere and hangs on random things while giving you painful reminders. Yep. It’s a hangnail. So, if you ever run into someone who just doesn’t seem to get it, here’s a handy-dandy video that explains it in the simplest of terms. It will either make them leave awkwardly and they will never speak on it again (low-key win) OR it will give an opportunity to talk about how they can best help (high-key win). If said person is still refuses to get it or care, ask yourself why do you still have them around. They are obviously not good for your anxiety and just may be a source of stress. Hope this helps! ❤️, Zandra

Here's another short video with my little buddy anxiety. Enjoy! "Crickets with Distant Traffic" from the Youtube Audio Library

Poverty is a story about us, not them - Microsoft News

"Too often still, we think we know what poverty looks like.

It’s the way we’ve been taught, the images we’ve been force-fed for decades.

The chronically homeless.

The undocumented immigrant.

The urban poor, usually personified as a woman of color, the “welfare queen” politicians still too often reference.

But as income inequality rises to record levels in the United States, even in the midst of a record economic expansion, those familiar images are outdated, hurtful, and counterproductive to focusing attention on solutions and building ladders of opportunity.

Half of homeless people have experienced traumatic brain injury: study

“Traumatic brain injury is linked to a host of problems, the researchers found, including poorer reported mental health, substance abuse, suicidal ideation, and even involvement with the criminal justice system.” A new study has found "strikingly" high rates of traumatic brain injury among the homeless population. 11/29/2019

It's Time to Talk About Black Girls and Anxiety

“The reality is when Black girls are suffering from any type of anxiety we aren’t afforded any understanding from our peers, family members or people outside of our communities. We’re not anxious or scared instead, we’re “weird”, ill-mannered badly behaved or just bitches. This isn’t speculation either, this was my lived experience for quite some time.” Recently, the discourse surrounding Black girls with social anxiety has become increasingly popular due to a certain R&B si
